Does anyone know what is causing this weird noise. I commute 40 miles each way every day and the noise starts around 20 minutes it started two days ago. The car has recently had new ignition coils fitted.

It's weird sometimes the noise comes when I'm accelerating and sometimes it's when I'm decelerating but it always comes when I am setting off from a stand still.

Can anyone help as it is quite concerning!

My neighbour has a 1.6 and it had an odd noise, he traced it to a spun bearing and apparently it is quite common.

Thank you for your reply. Was it an expensive repair? I too have a 1.6 and I've just noticed that if I press on the brake the sound disappears. Very strange.

Thank you once again

Perhaps the brakes are sticking. Go for a safe hoon and really use the brakes. See if noise gets better or worse.

Can you tell us what the noise sounds like/where you think it could be coming from/etc as there are a few noises on that video & which it is I have no idea.

Having said that, you say it goes when you brake, is that when your foot is on the brake it goes, or you brake & then can't hear it for a while?

He rebuilt it himself.

I would take it to an independent bmw specialist. Barker’s Motor Works in HASLEMERE or Andy Walker in West Sussex are good.

Sounds to me like the brakes pads are rubbing on the lip of the disks (probably on the back).
Check the disks, and feel for a lip on them. If there is more than about 1mm on them, change them, together with the pads.
Cheap and easy.

It's when my foot is on the brake it goes. Any ideas? Thank you. It's very random sometimes it comes sometimes it doesn't

If it is gone only when you have your brake pedal there are 2 possibilities.

1. There is something wrong with the brakes.

2. There is a drivetrain issue that is being caused by back-lash that is taken up when there is reverse torque (braking effect) on that side.

Thank you for your reply guys. I've had the car checked out was forced to actually as the fan belt went the other day and the brakes are the issue front and rear which need replacing pads and disks.

I got quoted 596.00 for all the work to be done.

The issue I have is I get paid on the last working day of the month (previous companies have always paid early but this one doesn't) and my MOT is due on 23rd. Can I go to a garage and say do the MOT but I will pay on the last working day. Will they accept this?

Thanks
