I knows this has likely been done but what cars would people recommend for a 17 year old, max 1500 or so and cheap insurance.
Needs to be safe so no classics etc but steering away from the usual corsa, fiesta etc.
I was thinking maybe a yaris?
Not a problem with a black box as he is very sensible and doesn't mind one at all.

For £1500 you can’t go wrong with a Yaris it will be pretty bombproof, however for more than that a Yaris is not really worth the cash (cheap feeling). But for shed value can’t go wrong.

I know you said £1500 but there’s bargaining room here and the choice is better.

Something alternative : Seat Ibiza FR? They look cool.

Honda civic type S - the fresh looking FN2 shape.

Not sure how much the bottom is to insure.

Bought my youngest an 09 Aygo as a stop gap when the spent a year working as a care assistant before university.

72k, paid £1600.

It's brilliant! Little 3 cylinder thrumming machine. They leak like sieves, though, so sealed up the rear lights, replaced the boot seal and added an extra seal to each door. That did it.

She loves it and will not let it go.

She had a years' no claims from a policy with a black box on Mrs van Guy's Meriva.

When we got the Aygo we put it, and the Mervia, on an Admiral multicar policy. Can't recall the exact premium but it was OK, less than a grand.

Have to admit that my first thought was a CAyg107 too. Loads of them around. Dirt cheap. Seemingly very reliable too.

Panda 1.1 Active. Bought one for each of my 3. Plenty out there and cheap as chips to run.

Thanks all.
Hadn't thought about the Volvo...
Aygo also a good shout, would the civic not be high on insurance?

These things are so variable but there’s no harm getting a quote, very easy to do. The 1.8 isn’t a rapid motor but is very economical, there’s a 1.4 too but that’ll be gutless.

I bought my son a Suzuki swift attitude, looks like a sport but 1200 engine, quite funky, was dead reliable and cheap to insure.

Just been through this with my eldest.
Looked at many of the options mentioned above and ended up with a Hyundai i10.
For us the fit and finish of the interior seemed better than C1/Aygo.
I would describe it as a big car shrunk down, not a small car built down to a price. Air con, central locking, electric windows, 4 speaker stereo all standard, It’s not as funky or interesting as some cars mentioned above, but my daughter is over the moon with it as her first car.

It’s only £405 for a years insurance as a learner, and quotes are around £850 with a black box, once test passed.

Worth a thought.

C/107/Aygo

Cheap as chips to run.

Can he wait until 18? Insurance comes down a bit.

I'm going through same type of situation, had quotes for a Micra at £1080 for 17 year old daughter.

I've got a very well looked after Astra 1.9CDTI 150bhp which I'm not using, plan was to sell it and buy my daughter a smaller car and add some funds, however Astra is only worth about £1200 even though it needs nothing doing to it. Thinking no way she'll get insured on the Astra, I ran it through and it came up as £1160 with black box..... she's getting the Astra!!, surprised the difference was so small.

My daughter bought an Alfa MiTo as her first car to learn in and use once she had passed her test. (Under my encouragement as had an Alfa at the time)

It is a 1.4 Veloce non turbo at 95 hp. Have to say, it is fun to drive and she loves it. And insurance is less than £1000 fully comp as a new driver. It was cheaper than the Corsa, Polo, Fiesta equivalent. I guess because they are not driven by too many youngsters.

If we were looking again, would probably do the same. However my son’s 1.2 Ibiza was pretty cheap and reliable as well. The Alfa feels a bit more solid and modern.
