My car only came with the service book and ten stamps as per ten years of age however there was no receipts at all for any work done and I've only so far got what was on the advert for it stating water pump and cam belt done at 105,000. I've contacted the garages that have so far stamped my service book to query what work if any they've done to the car but have only had one response saying they would get back to me and even then they have not got back to me. I'm presume the garages will say data protection and not help, any suggestions anyone? I'll write to the previous owner if no response from the garages.

If we had someone contact us about a service history we would have no issue telling them what had been carried out or stamping a service book, there is no need to give out the customers details.

If it's not a main dealer or specialist, I've found that most garages couldn't give a hoot about finding paperwork to confirm that work has been carried out with them

Why did you buy it if qualified history is so important to you? Is it something very rare?

If confirmed history is a must (I don't blame you for this as you want to know what maintenance has been carried out) I have to ask why didn't you check this before hand?

I keep all my receipts and hand them over when selling but the dealers have binned them every time. I’ve never bought a car which has had them from previous owners either

I think often the garage/mechanic will put a sticker or stamp near the relevant area in the engine bay with the date of the cambelt change. If the service book is stamped, the work done at each service should also be indicated.

Beyond that some patience with the garage and accept that you might never get the documentation you're looking for.

I bought a megane with history like this. On 60,000 miles, I asked the garage over the phone if the cam belt had been done…”errr yes it has yes at last service “

They simply ticked the extra box. Cam belt snapped at 61,000 miles.

I spoke to the previous owner and she confirmed definitely not done.

You’re wise not to rely on it and verify the cam belt at the least.

Friend worked in a dealer , had drawers full of stamps and spare books. Worth nothing to me.

OK well unfortunately the car came without history and having spent a lot of time looking for cars I can see it's not exactly uncommon. I have had a reply from the garage in my town and awaiting a response from two others. The book does have stamps and I think it's just oil changes. Its passed all the mots except one so far I'm not overly concerned but I have two most recent oil changes receipts. Cam belt and water pump was changed as per car advert. I was trying to find out if the ⚙ box oil had been changed.
