Been looking at a few of these golfs , like the way they look and power seems about right, just wondering if anyone has any experience of whether they are worth it?

In the market for something for around 2kish, looking for something quicker than my old polo, any other recommendations?

Cheers.

It all depends on mileage/age/spec/condition & of course price, personally these would get my vote first.

OK for mile munching and using for station car park runs etc. Nothing special and like all Golfs of that age suffer from rusty wings, a lot that have seen have poor specs despite the "GT" badge and the interior will most likely be showing its age (another VW thing of that age where everything is covered with a rubbery coating from new which wears off and looks rubbish).

Good cars but your biggest challenge will be finding a good well looked after one. Mine was still going strong at north of 150k miles but it had been well maintained doing high miles each year. Expect suspension, bushes, and electrical items that could need replacing. They start to need turbos at higher miles too.

That silver one looks alright. Something looks a little off with the bonnet on that blue one to me, might just be in my head. When you go to look at them, check the carpet under the mats, these cars are quite prone to water ingress.

Both of them look a bit stingily specced, I'd sooner pick the Alfa Giulietta that ZX listed. Miles more toys, faster, more fun to drive, just as economical and reliable as the Golfs.

Mine was a disaster area.

Turbo failed and ECU. What killed it was rusty running gear, including the abs rings which literally crumbled away and the electrics, it had nearly every light on the dash lit up when I finally got shot of it. All the fasteners are crap too, expect snapped bolts if you have to dismantle it.

My Gt Tdi golf i had of similar age had a terrible engine shake that according to the Internet was a dual mass flywheel issue. It was fine when cold but once the engine warmed up the car use to shake really bad when stationery. The car was under warranty but i was never able to resolve the issue. Just something to watch out for, make sure you get the engine warm if test driving.

Mine (a 2008 car) was pretty unreliable. Had it for 5 years and 100k miles, it had two really expensive problems in that time. I wouldn't buy another, even for shed money.

What about Germanic reliability and Teutonic build quality?
