Finally bought a E31 after lusting after one for years! It’s a 4.4 which the engine I’ve always wanted. Car has travelled 80,000 miles and apart from rust on the sunroof it’s in pretty good condition.

Car hasn’t had much love in the last four or five years and during that time it’s travelled less than 1,000 miles. Seems to drive fine but I want to give it a real “birthday” before I go on a decent road trip. What would your suggestions be in terms of items to tackle to bring everything up to speed? Thinking oil, all filters, plugs, brake and ps fluid. What else am I missing?

What state are the tyres in after sitting that long?

Previous owner took it for short trips so it hasn’t been sitting enough to cause flat spots but in any event will replace the tyres.

Has the 3 piece deep dish wheels - front 235/45/17 and rear 265/40/17. Any recommendations on which tyres to fit?

the rear size can be hard to find, think i've got some falkens on mine in 265, you can fit 255 if you can't find the 265's.

Rust round the sunroof needs to be nipped in the bud, it it will spread.

check bushes on the rear suspension, they perish

drivetrain is fairly bullet proof

brakes lines are usually rusty!

Thanks - yes currently on Falkens but I has hoping I could fit something a bit better

Appreciate the tip, will check rear suspension and brake lines.

Brakes do feel rather soggy / need a heavy foot. This was the same on a 850i I drove a couple of months back. Is this a characteristic?

yes the brake feel is terrible, make sure the power steering has the correct chf fluid in it also, as power steering fluid rots the seals
