Debt Collectors - Utility bill, previous house after leaving

Think I probably know the answer to this one but before I respond and engage these cretins I thought I'd ask if anyone has had the same thing.
Sold house 01/12/20, we were with a supplier for Electric and Gas.
Told them 01/12, provided meter reading and paid final bill etc.
Year later (to the day), we get a letter from some debt collection scum of the earth type affairs - They are seeking payment for 02/12 to 25/12, i.e. very clearly, the following day onwards until the new owner selected a supplier.
There's loads of reference to credit files etc in their template letter, I cannot see any reference to utilities in our credit reports so presume this is a bluff.
So to summarise:
-They knew we didn't live there between these dates and presumably why the supplier made no attempt to contact us themselves
-Debt collectors have bought the debt and are flinging s
t in the hope something sticks/someone panic pays
-New owner is a landlord and I think there was a few weeks period after purchasing before a tenant moved in
Is there any risk to our credit files? Would you suggest engaging and telling them to Foxtrot Oscar or will that be like replying to a spam email - opening us up.

Irritating, I assume they have also written to the owner/current tenant too - Looks like I'll have to ring, will see if I can get the council tax bill mentioned in the other thread along with confirmation of completion etc
