I succumbed to a music streaming service today. Youtube Music.

I downloaded the app from Appstore and was vaguely surprised that it was £12.99pm. I thought it was £9.99.

Anyway, my children asked me to upgrade to family, which they knew was £14.99pm. Except Apple wants £19.99. The cheeky sods want £5 tax per month!

So I have cancelled my subscription and instead subscribed online, and then pinned the page to my phone home screen. This will work, I think, but I won't be able to control it via Carplay.

One of my children thinks that I may still be able to use the app. My assumption is that after the free trial is over Apple will stop me doing so, because I am not paying via them and ponying up their cut.

Who is correct?

Once you have your subscription you can log into the app on anything. You don't need to sign up through apple to be able to log in on apple devices.

Youtube Premium is £17.99 I think. Music £14.99.

So if I had signed up online and then downloaded YTM app I wouldn't have been exposed to Apple's tax take, is that correct?

So now I have cancelled my subscription through apple and signed with YTM directly the same applies?

Some on here are suggesting you sign up in Argentina when you next go on holiday there as is is a lot cheaper. When you return from your Argentinian holiday, you continue to pay the Argentinian price.

I haven't researched it further, but when I looked into it that deal had finished.

It’s not a hotuks deal / voucher it’s just a method of circumventing the geographical area while you sign up. Once your signed up everything is normal. Yeah I don’t know if you can still do it now you’ve signed up already. I would probably unsign up, then try this method you’ve nothing to lose except a couple of hours messing about with vpn etc
Two hours! Do you have ANY idea how valuable my time is? wink

It wouldn’t work for me with a vpn, seems to know I’m in the UK even with a vpn that I’ve tested shows me as outside the UK.

I subscribe to Apple Music and YouTube. I have to be honest, YouTube Music sucks. I only have it because I subscribed to Google Play Music, which was 'transferred' across. It's really flaky and they love replacing your playlist tracks with dreadful 'live' versions or 'sung by' version. It always forgets where you in a playlist, or even what playlist you are listening to. The UI is cak too.

Only good thing is having YT Premium with no ads. Apple Music is getting better and better, I really like it now and it's been ages since I couldn't find something on it which was available elsewhere.

I'm a big fan of YT with no ads.
Never had it change a playlist and the choice is unbeatable.

Well, it isn't 'unbeatable' when they swap out your saved songs for gash live versions. Use YT Music on the iPhone, pick a playlist and start playing. Stop music and do something else - go back to it later and it will be back on the main screen, totally lost what playlist you are listening to let alone where you were in it.

Any reason why you don’t just use Spotify? It’s absolutely brilliant, so easy to make playlists, sounds superb, can download to phone, seamlessly integrates with your phone, computer , smart speakers etc.

I pay for the family plan, I have me, Wife, Dad, Father in law and Mother in law on it - one of the best value subscriptions out there if you split it up like that.

I use YT on my windows laptop, it never changes my playlists. Maybe the app is different. Maybe their aren't any gash live versions of William Shatner's Christmas hits. Maybe you need more Shatner Clause in your life? hehe

Not had a problem with it either. Moved across from Tidal but I have the Argentinian flavour rather than the Indian mentioned above. Less than 3 quid a month for a family plan that includes the Music and YouTube Premium.

To answer your first question - yes, that would explain it
To answer your second.... who doesn't?! But then what will I do with all the Leonard Nimoy tracks I have saved? hehe
