Afternoon all,

I'm redoing my home office over Christmas and looking to add some mood lighting behind the tv/monitor. The other lamps in there currently are plugged in to Hive plugs. I would like the LED strips to do the same, but I've found with some products, they need to be switched via remote control or a button on the transformer.

Can anyone recommend a setup which will just come on via a switched socket without the need for any other intervention? Or failing that can be controlled via Hive?

Thanks.

If you are switching hive plugs from an app or voice why not just use something like this https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SONOFF-L1-Smart-LED-Lig...

I’ve been using Govee led stuff for about two years, it just works and is really easy to install, either via Alexa, a remote or a phone app.

That would be the obvious choice, but I already have some other lights switched by Hive plugs and I want them all to be grouped together in the Hive app.

Again I've seen these and they look good but I need something I can switch with my existing HIve gear.

I don’t know much about Hive, but the smart plugs are expensive, £39! The Alexa plugs I use are £11 each.

The Govee led’s I linked to will come on once you power them up and will retain their last used settings, you don’t need the remote or the app and can manually control them via a set of 3 buttons on the chord. So once you’ve initially set up the colour, pattern and brightness you can switch them on/off via a Hive smart plug and your settings will work without further intervention.

My daughter has them around her bedroom doorframes and along the back of her dressing table and desk, they are really effective. She controls them with Alexa, but no reason why Hive couldn’t do the same.

Just buy a raspberry pi and setup home assistant or openhab you will then be able to add any smart device and have them all work together from one app. Takes a bit of setting up but you don't end up stuck with buying expensive plugs just so you can use the same app

Possibly, but it does make buying smart kit easier and cheaper. You could just get an alexa and set up a routine on that.

As already mentioned, Phillips Hue are the only people I know who do smart mood lighting and are natively compatible with the Hive App. https://www.hivehome.com/connects-with?icid=HP%3AC...

But I'd also echo the calls that Hive is not the dominant force with home automation and so you'd be better off with a different ecosystem to open up more offerings if you're serious about it. Bigger players like Apple HomeKit, Amazon Alexa and Google Home can access a much wider range of devices in app and through voice control and the integrations do most of what Hive can do natively. I have Hive for my heating and I can do anything with the thermostat through Amazon that I can do with the Hive app but I can also make a simple lamp smart with a cheap plug rather than the over priced Hue/Hive equivalent. The only thing I miss out on is the graphs/history but Hive are trying to move people to a subscription model for that in any case, and if you really wanted to do it you could with things like Home Assistant and various graphing applications (not for the faint hearted though so would not recommend)

I would say it is fairly easy to setup a basic system using openhab 3, or home assistant these days, it only gets a little tricky when you have lots of things interacting, I have over 1200 items in my home automation system.

Maybe you're after more than just a simple bit of colour behind the telly but i have a strip of cheap ones stuck to the back of the tv and plugged into the usb on the tv, they come on when the tv powers up. I set it to whatever colour i preferred first time i powered it up and never changed it so don't need it to be smart. Think they were a fiver or something.

Want something I can control via Siri on my phone and that can be on a timer. I don’t want alexa devices in my house.

I might be missing something, but wouldn’t usb powered ones work, with a usb power supply plugged into a Hive socket?
