Keeps asking me to verify my number and then makes me wait 24-48 hrs before sending me an SMS code! Working ok on tablet but not phone. Have uninstalled and reinstalled but no difference.
Any ideas ?

Not sure you can use the same number on two devices. If this is what you are trying to do that's why it may not work!

Wonder if you can use the web app on the laptop to synch to your mobile?

Just use the web app on your tablet, may need to set browser to desktop mode.

I've had this problem before, it was caused by the device having crap mobile phone signal. Not sure why but it seems to stop checking for SMS properly and with calls over WiFi you don't find out until an app says it's sending you a text that never arrives. A reboot seems to fix it, but it might not be your problem.

I had WhatsApp moved to my tablet during lock-down as I only very occasionally needed to move it back to my phone as I was never out for any length of time and it works well. But on an Android Tablet there isn't a web-app version of WhatsApp is there? I mean I can use the webpage in Chrome, but that's not really very good, is there an equivalent of the two PC apps that are out there now?

You can so long as you have the phone to get the text message from. You can swap the account between the devices, but can't have both connected at the same time. It's far from ideal, but it only works at all really if you can quickly swap over, which means getting that SMS immediately.

Incidentally if you have a Samsung phone and a Samsung Tablet you can use their phone companion app so that your phones calls and texts come through on the tablet, which then makes it even easier to swap over as you can do it without the phone, but obviously the SMS still needs to arrive.

Good morning and thanks for your suggestions. I waited the requisite 48 hours and got an SMS from WA and, finally, I'm back in, on my phone. Trouble is, all chats since mid 2020 are missing !!!. I've uninstalled whatsapp from my tablet and installed Tablet Messenger (which includes whatsapp. Same problem. No chats showing since last year, not even those from a week ago. Any ideas or suggestions, please ?

I think it's too late. You are supposed to "Back Up" your chats before uninstalling. Anything not backed up might not be reinstalled.

You can move back to the device with the messages on and back them up, then move over again and restore. I think.

Any ideas? you ask.

Well, I have an idea, uninstall it and leave it uninstalled.

I have never had so much tripe on my phone in my life.

Yours etc

Thanks Mr grumpy. I (used to) really enjoy whatsapp. Great for messaging f&f, photos, videos and calls. Just sad I appear to have lost so much.

WhatsApp doesn't offer anything other apps don't.

Install Signal and Telegram alongside whatsapp, and you will find many of your contacts will also be on these too.

That's not quite true is it, what WhatsApp offers is a single place where 99% of the people you know and the groups you're involved with are. For most people the others don't work unless you also install WhatsApp and if you do that you might as well just have all your conversations in one place.

I can't speak for anyone else, but while everyone I talk to regularly is on Whatsapp, about 20-30% of them are on Signal or Telegram

I didn't suggest to OP to not keep whatapp, but to supplement it.

It's not in the public interest for Zuckerberg to have so much dominance.
