Pretty cool clip. I remember those Russian Knights when they came to Leuchars, first time in the West, sat in one of those Flankers.

BTW >>30Mb for anyone on dialup. Fast connection though if you've got a fat pipe...

Downloading it now, thank god for broadband.

Met Chris the 2005 Harrier display pilot recently, nice chap, awesome job, and all the women wanted their photo taken with him.

Jealous, moi? If I wasn't too old I'd be applying now.

Have just made a 1 hour DVD of the Southend air show. Thinking of selling copies for charity, not sure of the legality of this though especially with the music dubbed over.

Depends on the music. If it's commercial music there will be copyright and performing rights to clear. However, if you approach the record company nicely with a copy of the DVD and say it's strictly for charity, they MIGHT give you the OK. Long shot though.

Or you can just wing it, but it will be illegal because you have copied the music without permission.

There are several good videos of airshows at http://anthonyjhicks.com/videos

Mostly large files. I've just downloaded the EF2000, Grippen and Mig29 files below. The Mig routine is awesome.

http://downloads.planetmirror.com/pub/airshow/riat2003_mig29_576x460_48hz_mpeg4.zip (119MB)

http://downloads.planetmirror.com/pub/airshow/riat2003_eurofighter_576x460_48hz_mpeg4.zip (81MB)

http://downloads.planetmirror.com/pub/airshow/riat2003_gripen_576x460_48hz_mpeg4.zip (70.8MB)

(right clic and save as; they have ftp links there too)

Article on clearances (skip to the section on post-production): www.dv.com/news/news_item.jhtml?LookupId=/xml/feature/2004/crowell1104

In brief: "Clearing intellectual property can be tedious, tricky, and time-consuming" - and expensive if anyone other than the artist's mum has heard of them

Yep

Péter Besenyei

Arguably the most famous and successful aerobatic pilot of his generation, Peter Besenyei has been credited with helping to create the concept behind the Red Bull Air Race.

Besenyei was approached by Red Bull with the idea for an Air Race in 2001 and over the next two years they refined the concept until it was ready to launch at 2003 AirPower in Zeltweg, Austria.

Fittingly, Besenyei won the first race and has since added two other Air Race titles to his resume – in his homeland at Tokol in 2003, and at the season-opening event in Abu Dhabi in 2005.

The Hungarian ace began flying gliders at the age of 15 after joining an aviation club, where he helped to pay his way by washing planes and sweeping out the hangar.

At the age of 20 he competed in his first aerobatic event, where he took second place. He has been flying aerobatics regularly since 1982.

The winner of countless aerobatic events around the world, Besenyei is a twice winner of the FAI World Grand Prix Series and twice winner of the World Aerobatic Championship.

Besenyei, who also has a passion for fishing, became a well-know national figure in Hungary after he flew his Extra 300L upside down under Budapest’s Chain Bridge in 2001.

The 'Blue' Aircraft are SU26's flown by Paul Bonhomme and Steve Jones.

Paul Bonhomme, aged 40, caught the aerobatic bug at the age of 15 while cleaning airplanes at his local airfield near London. Payment was in the form of flights in a Pitts Special. He obtained his own flying license at 17 and was a flying instructor by the age of 19. In 1986 Paul started displaying unlimited aerobatic airplanes, and he has flown around 600 public displays to date. Since 1994 he has specialized in formation aerobatics in the Sukhoi 26, in an aerial partnership with Steve Jones. He also flies vintage fighters for a collection at Duxford, England. His "day job" is as a 747 captain for a commercial airline (BA).

Steve Jones has a general fondness for flying high: as his “day job” he pilots a Boeing 747 for a commercial airline, and in his spare time he does aerobatics and takes part in air shows with his friend Paul Bonhomme as “The Matadors”. In 1995 Steve became UK Freestyle Aerobatics Champion and in 1996 Overall British Aerobatic Champion. Like Paul, Steve also competed in the world premiere of the Red Bull Air Race in Zeltweg (Styria/Austria) in 2003.

(Random stuff from some of the judging and spannering crew at Longleat)

- apparently Péter Besenyei left a sighting device in a tree at Longleat (which is only fair, most people who take vehicle tour at Longleat lose a part or two - but I understand the monkeys were not to blame this time).

- the (epic!) control tower sways gently in a decent wind.

- the only liquid refreshment in the control tower was (inevitably) Red Bull - on that sweltering day....

- the publicity airborne shot at Stonehenge was eventful - Jones, Bonhomme & Lamb can fly a tight formation (no real surprise there), the rest of the lads are a bit rusty, apparently.

- the return from Stonehenge was marked by big Frank wiping the gear off his Extra at Wing Farm - £60K bill for him, exciting (read, "Do I have fuel for this?" diversion for everybody behind him. But he was still able to rent a replacement within the hour - class.
