I was coming up to a round about and all of a sudden I got a drive train error and car went into limp mode. The following faults is what was stored on Ista

Gear monitoring fixed gear clutch b disrupted

The car has always had its gearbox oil drained and refilled every 50k . There was also a battery error there saying battery is very old. My car is 2012 so I guess it is due a new battery.

Any ideas ?

Check the battery voltages first, as you've said; it's more than likely that

These cars hate a poor battery and kick up all sorts of weird & wonderful codes

Voltages should be around 12.4v with engine off and car asleep; and around 14.4v with the engine idling

I've just fitted an Exide 95Ah AGM battery to my F01; but know folk on the 5 forums have fitted the Exide 105Ah AGM battery to their F11s. Unfortunately their size doesn't fit the battery location in an F01 as I tried

The battery will also need registering to your car; which can be done with INSTA, Carly for BMW, Bimmercode or a decent scanner etc

Got the battery tester out and it shows it does need replacing. It's charging at 14.8 volts. Considering I did a 5 hour motorway run yesterday the state of charge is still at 60percent

The BMW battery currently in the car is 90AH and 900CCA. The battery I see online seem to be 90AH and 850CCA. Is the CCA is lower by 50 will that cause any issues ?

You can fit any battery you want; I'd always advise to go one higher if you can, so go for the 95Ah battery

Did your car actually go into limp mode or just say 'full performance unavailable'?

I get this drivetrain error from time to time on my 640, 99% of the time it is when I pull out of my road in the morning and up a slight hill, if I accelerate more than my granny would it pings up the drivetrain error (whereas if I take it very steadily it never does).

Performance doesn't seem to be affected at all and I usually just switch ignition off and back on, it clears error and is fine for rest of journey.

It never does it again at any point of my 22 mile commute and doesn't ever do it on any other journeys either.

I'm just putting it down to an over sensitive sensor that only reacts when engine/gearbox cold?
