When I bought my Jan '03 996TT a few months ago, I judged the car had had a really gentle life by looking at the Pirelli P-Zero's.

The DOT numbers confirmed this was the original set, and now, a few months down the line, they have done 11,300 miles and still have 3mm tread on the rears (and even more on the front of course).

From comments posted elsewhere most people seem to get 5k to 8k miles out of the rears at most.

Am I correct in assuming 11,300 and counting is unusually low wear rate, and hence the car has indeed had a gentle life?

I get the impression the 996tt is a little lighter on its tyres than the 993tt, but yes i'd say your 11,300 with tread to spare is pretty easy going.

I'm lucky to see 6k miles out of a pair of rears...

Very low wear rate. Just remember to check the wear on the inner tread as it wears down quicker than the outer (due to the geometry/setup).

If most of its use was on the motorway and A roads then i suppose over 10k is reasonable. Mind you they could be the last owners spares and his usuals being track tyres.

I got 18K out of the same tyres because I march up and down the M3 in mine that included a track day too. Corner entry speeds are so high in a 996TT and roads in UK car and visibility cluttered I use mine more as a fast GT than a hugely fast corner taker. Corners are of course the fun part too - I do know that !

Slightly OT, but I've found the 993tt tyres wear rate is ALOT better than a 928- which suprises me no end!
The 928s appetite for tyres - even driven quite sedately never ceased to amaze me.

Holy cow, how much did you get out of the rears on your 928?

My old 'Blade used to eat a Pirelli Dragon Corsa in 1500 miles, but a switch to BT56's got me almost 4000 miles from the rear...

3500-5000 miles on conti Sport contacts, and I DIDN'T drive hard. The fronts lasted twice as long.
I got the geometry checked also and checked with some other owners who concurred that theirs had similar appetites.
I started focusing on "Treadwear" numbers as wear became such an important factor (this was my daily driver). I'm having trouble remembering the make right now, but buy going for a less performance orientated tyre and one with a higher treadwear number I managed to get 8000-9000 miles from the rears.
With the 993tt, over 11,000 miles would be great, especially now that I'm keeping with performance orientated tyres.....

Interesting...

On my Box (which shouldn't hammer the rears the same way) I got 17,000 miles and six or so track days (OK - three wet) out of a set of Michelin Pilot Sports. I was delighted with that. I admit I am very kind to the tyres on road...

Silverstone last week DEMOLISHED the new rears I had on, though....not sure this next set is going to last the same way...

18K on rears!! WTF! I get 3.5-5k out of a set of rears on my 996 C2. Is there something wrong with my car?

Looks like Cyrus1971 wins the contest for max miles from a set of rears, although I am pretty happy with my 11,300 and counting.
