Which watch for 18 years pressie up to £800
Discussion
Hi Folks
I am after a bit of help please, my son has just turned 18 and wanted an Interail ticket for next summer post exam exploring, this looks to have fallen through so he has said he would like a watch.
He sort of likes a Tissot but I do think there are some cool new brands coming out these days and wanted a bit of inspiration off people who follow watches as to what’s good value around this price band.
He has skinny wrists so doesn’t want a big chunky thing, he wants a steel strap, a timeless design he would prefer a mechanical movement but he isn’t really that fixed in this opinion. In fact he likes my Stainless steel Omega I have had for 21 years but he’s not having it.
Any advice and ideas gratefully received.
Thanks
Ed

For the budget, the two mainstream brands that spring to mind are Tissot and Hamilton (Both part of the Swatch group I think...). I own watches from both brands and my first proper watch purchased from Selfridge's in London (which to this day I regret selling) was a quartz Tissot PRC200 with white dial.
As a member of the skinny wrist club (6 inch lefthand wrist) I would say Tissot edges it over Hamilton for watches with shorter lug to lug measurements and streamlined cases though I own a Hamilton Jazzmaster Viewmatic (Quartz) which is perfect for my wrist size (see below) though for your budget it has to be mechanical /Auto IMO...just that bit more special.

Slightly over budget but you may be able to haggle and get a little off.

Yup, that's the other choice at the price. Both terrific.Another shout for Certina, a lesser-known brand in the Swatch group and under-appreciated IMO but this means great bang for buck.
I picked this up for around £240 using a Black Friday code, ETA movement and well finished including open display case back.... definately will be looking at other models as their prices haven't gone mental unlike others.
N.b: The strap is not OEM, it's a Hirsch that I had lying around:

I think one of the Certina's will tick the boxes. It's a 38mm too so should be good if he has skinny wrists as you put it.
However, please shop around as these a widely available for £5xx. The above links are just references.

Thanks for the suggestions it seems the Certina and Tissot are the favourites so we will go and look at some rather than buying on line.
My Omega is a Constellation plain stainless steel case and strap with Roman numerals around the fixed bezel with a white face. I wear it everyday for everything.
I also have my father’s Hamilton from the sixties.
