Full UK licence
Discussion
Hi all,
Quick question that seems obvious to me but the insurance disagree on.
I have held a full UK motorcycle licence since 2017 but have only just passed my car test.
When I apply for insurance and they ask how Long I have held a full UK driving licence (not car driving licence) for, my answer is 4 years not less than a year, right?
I dont have a provisional, I have a UK driving licence with motorcycle entitlement, now it has car entitlement.
When I asked the insurance company they said even their system doesn't have an option to distinguish between the 2 yet they want me to say I've only just got my licence.
Any info would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Seems to me that you are filling in a form for car insurance, ergo they want your car licence stats.
Plus they have told you what they want, if you are not happy go elsewhere.

That's the point, it's not a provisional licence, it's a UK driving licence, it seems the definition could be open to interpretation. If I went to someone else and said I have held a licence since 2017 and showed them that picture without information blocked out, it wouldn't technically be a lie.

This is correct. Must be the period held for the class of vehIcle involved . I note on the reverse of the licence the date ' valid from ' is the actual date test passed if insurers ask for this . Oddly hadn't noticed before..Plus they have told you what they want, if you are not happy go elsewhere.

Not to be a dick but...
Anyone can pick holes in anything, but surely it's obvious to any rational person that the question relates to the type of vehicle being insured.
I worked in the haulage sector, Lots of LGV drivers pass their class one test in their 30s or 40s. When insuring an artic, ask them when they passed their test, and they'll all answer 2 year, 5 years etc, whenever they passed their class 1. Because that's what the insurance is for. None of them ever said 25 years, being when they passed their car or bike test. And they weren't always the brightest fireworks in the box. But even they understood what was being asked.

As I said it seemed the language left it open to interpretation, then asked the question. I'm not sure how you gather information but I generally find this to be a useful way. Brightest firework in the box or not, no need to be a dick about it ay.I worked in the haulage sector, Lots of LGV drivers pass their class one test in their 30s or 40s. "I'd like to insure my car please"
"Certainly, how long have you held a full licence?"
Anyone who claims they thought that question could be asking about anything else than a car licence is an idiot. If you think it applies to a motorcycle licence, it might just as well apply to a tv licence. So someone aged 50 who's just passed can say 30 years because that's when they got their first tv licence.
