Playback Local Files on Apple TV
Discussion
I want to setup something simple so as my parents can watch some videos stored locally through their Apple TV.
Everything currently goes through the Apple TV and I need to keep this really, really simple for them. Playback through the TV itself is out, as it's probably circa 20 years old and will only cause confusion if they've to use 2 remotes and switch inputs etc
I'm thinking a USB stick or HD plugged into the router and use VLC on the Apple TV is probably the simplest?
I know there are some paid solutions out there, but this will be used so little it's not worth it, and there's no payment card connected to the Apple account, which is how it's best kept.
So am I right to try VLC as a start point, or are there other very simple nil-cost options I should consider?

Plex is totally overkill, and any server or NAS would very likely be unplugged as it's an old school household and stuff gets unplugged religiously if it's not in use.
There's no tech in the house - a broadband router, the Apple TV, and 2 Android phones. So need to keep things simple.
