Hi,

I recently bought a brand new HP Pavillion laptop with windows 11 for new job with reputable company, 400 sales reps

Company presentations that I have downloaded have videos that wont play.

"Video couldn't be decoded"

No issues with youtube etc.

Company's IT guy remotely took over laptop for an hour this morning and could not resolve issue.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Regards,

Steve

If VLC won't play them, then what format are they in?

Kind of ironic given the adverts saying how good at streaming video W11 is hehe IT bod here too, VLC would have been my suggestion.

Is it encoded in a format that requires an additional, possibly paid for, download from the Windows Store?

I seem to remember W10 removed the free HEVC/H.265 codec some time ago - although you could by it from the Windows Store for £0.99 - and the workaround (for a while) was to install the free developer version.

I'd try the K-Lite Codec pack I use this on Server 2012 which also seems to have poor support for video playback.

+1 for K-Lite, been using it for over a decade across various flavours of Wintel. The only thing is some codecs still require you to use the classic media player (which does come with the K-Lite pack).
