The first time an RAF jet has shot down or even at an enemy aircraft since WW2.

"It is the first time the British military has downed another enemy aircraft since the Falklands War nearly 40 years ago."

It's got to be worth the expense of running 9 squadrons of typhoons when you are using them as effectively as that!

yes

Cost of ASRAAM missile to shoot down drone = £200,000, paid for by UK taxpayer.
Cost of Typhoon to carry it = £110,000,000, paid for by UK taxpayer.
Cost to train RAF pilot to push button = £5,700,000, paid for by UK taxpayer.

Cost of 'small hostile drone' = £39.95 with free delivery from Amazon

We don't have any 'allies'.

Cost of inserting tongue as far as possible up Murrican sphincter... way too much.

Apparently, an ASRAAM missile "flies at supersonic speed - faster than the speed of sound". The fact that the BBC feels the need to explain what supersonic means tells you all you need to know about the organisation's opinion of their audience's education.

But of greater interest - has the US or any other airforce shot down drones; is it a frequent or rare occurrence ?

Does the typhoon have machine guns?

Is it impractical or unsafe to shoot it down?

Cheaper but maybe dangerous for crew?

Yes we do.
ally1
/ˈalʌɪ/
noun
plural noun: allies
a state formally cooperating with another for a military or other purpose.

Maybe you'd be happier cutting the defence budget to zero and spending it all 'on the NHS' or some other mindless drivel.

Probably not a £40 thing from Amazon though was it?
Let's hope they stopped a lot of casualties.
People bomb Maternity Hospitals now ffs!
We don't know what it was up to. Or how heavily it was armed.
We, have only read an article on the news!

My point exacty: they don't 'cooperate' with us... they tell us exactly what they want us to do while we fawn around their feet like a spaniel.

I was thinking it might have simply been a convenient opportunity to prove the missile works on drones, not often they get a chance and there are no casualties.

Plus it sends a message

yes Very true: it says : 'you can cost us £hundreds of thousands challenging our fancy technology at a cost to you of buttons'.

Same as IED's send the message : 'you can spend all the money you like on high-tech fighting vehicles and equipment, but we'll still blow your arms and legs off with a couple of barrels of fertiliser and some loose nuts and bolts'.

It does but probably more to keep the CofG. Shooting air to air with guns I’d imagine is last resort but shooting a drone with a missile would mean it was sizeable but you can shoot from range.

No.

Its does have a single 27mm Mauser cannon, but MOD were initially not going to pay for its support or ammo for them (same though as the Tornado cannon) or sanction training the pilots to use it, but I believe that numbskull penny pinching idea was later to be changed, although how much training or live fire of the cannon any pilots have done is another matter. Any they have done its likely to have been air-to-ground not air-to-air.

Interesting. I’d imagine it’d be difficult to hit a drone with the gun.

The news reports keep saying that it’s the first air to air combat since the Falklands War. Did the RAF or Fleet Air Arm not shoot anything down during the Gulf War or had all the Iraq jets fled to Iran before they had a chance?

Which is an excellent argument for having powerful armed forces. But we've frittered away cash on hopeless causes instead.

Anyway, if the st hits the fan I'd rather live in America than Russia. How about you?
