I think he got lucky to get a manslaughter conviction.
There was a thread a few months ago about in the Homes forum about someone considering taking down scaffolding and about how hard Scaffolders are etc. The truth is not about how much of a "hardman" someone is but what lengths the will go to. This guy looks like a right simp but a book was judged by its cover seemingly.
When I was more active in training years ago, I sparred so to speak with lots of guys including scaffolders and they are undoubtedly robust and in a ring context they are very good but that tragically does match a POS who will use a car.
Going for "meets" should be reserved for professional types because after the little kerfuffle that ensued, to let that POS back in his car and not see what he was doing was literally fatal.
I bet there's a few people wishing they'd unliked each other and moved on.
Another hard learned lesson.

I don't know why he wasn't given murder - seems as deliberate as it could possibly be.

"As Mr Tester walked away, Mir ran him over, before stopping and then repeatedly reversing over him, police said."

The group of men including the victim were scaffolders.

I remember driving past where it happened on the way home from work and thinking it odd that the police had cordoned off the entrance to M&S, I assumed it was probably a robbery or something along those lines until I heard what had happened a couple of days later.

I’m not an expert on law and I’m sure there’s a resident lawyer on here that could shed some more light on it but my understanding is that this would be manslaughter as opposed to murder as it wasn’t premeditated and happened in a moment of madness?.
Not condoning what he did by any means I think it’s awful and tragic, and it’s his family and friends I really feel for.
I hope he does every day of those 15 years but knowing the justice system in this country sadly that’s unlikely.

Agreed. How can repeatedly driving over someone not be murder?

Sounds like the whole scenario was a load of macho posturing gone horribly wrong.

Shame he didn't 'nudge' some Insulate protesters instead - probably would have got off completely.

maybe he said something along the lines of "it was self defence and I thought I was running over his legs to stop him attacking me" and it was enough to introduce doubt?

Disappointing verdict though. Have the sentencing remarks been published? I can't find them.

Trying to understand exactly what happened there;

Mir and Butler arranged to meet up and have a conversation about an ex-girlfriend they both dated.

Butler showed up with his colleagues Waring, Tester and Ervin.

When Mir got out of his car, Butler allegedly punched him to the ground.

Mir then got back into his car and ran over Waring and Tester, seriously injuring one and killing the other.

Mir has 8 previous convictions including ABH and drunk driving.

To answer your question re Scaffolders and the other post, it was based around someone deciding whether to remove some scaffolding without agreeing with the actual scaffolder and he was warned of the ominous possible outcomes of doing this as all scaffolders are ex Para psychos or the like. My point was I've come across people who couldn't fight their way out of paper bag but would stab/wound or blind someone without hesitation usually with a weapon. I found how you portrayed it above a very apt because he'd got a "slap" and should have known his place, unfortunately one party didn't get the memo of the rules of the day

Its all very adolescent. Lack of emotional control, impulsive action: these are things that get these sort of people sent to prison.

Ridiculous ‘hardman’ posturing. Giving a ‘slap’ etc. Turning up with mates, undoubtably with discussion beforehand on if he is ‘out of order’. Winding up in advance of the situation, making it very hard td to back down.

A reasonable discussion between adults clearly beyond their capabilities.

Injury or death is always a potential with these situations and people. Prison is full of people unable to see potential consequences to their actions.

That’s why most of us on here will never end up in these situations.

Of course if someone spilt my pint/looked at my kids/threatened my scaffolding I’d be right up in their face, yeah. Out of ooooordeeeerrrr!

Mind you, I am a bit tasty and love my nan.
