Afternoon all. Hoping for some sound advice... Currently in a lease A6 Avant, which runs out in march. Was a decent deal at the time (would be a phenomenal deal in today's climate I guess)...

ALD have said I can do a 3 month informal extension but the cost would go up by £100 odd. Found this odd as previous extensions (4 series and S5), the cost stayed the same. When I did 12 month extension in the S5 the cost came down significantly. Of course those were different times and I know they want the car back to sell!

Been on this forum every day for months hoping for a decent lease deal to replace. Obviously it's way too late for anything factory order, but I think I've given up on finding a lease deal anyway now.

I run my own company, but most firms want 3 years accounts to put a lease through the business. This scuppered me getting a Tesla on the recent vanarama deal.

Anyway, to the point. I *think* I've made the decision to buy something used and run it for a year or 2 until normal production restarts. I just don't know what to buy, hence this rambling post.

I do around 20k miles per year, so needs to be comfortable.

Fairly rapid, am thinking 6 cylinders.

30+ MPG average ideally.

Was originally thinking diesel (640d GC, 435d GC), but am slightly dubious about shifting when the time comes.

Budget could be £25k but ideally £20k tops.

Work requires lugging fair bit of stuff so needs to have room. Not necessarily an estate though.

Isofix ideally as have a 3 year old to ferry around.

I keep coming back e400 AMG's, does anyone have any real world knowledge or any massive issues with them? I had c250 couple which I loved but there was zero legroom or headroom in the back.

S4 Avant another option.

Apologies again for the long post, any suggestions greatly appreciated 👍

I'm sure the E400 AMG would be a nice place to be and comfy too, certainly comfier than a S4.
I'd be less sure about getting >30 mpg in the real world, but would not be far off.

Is a coupe not a bit of a pain with getting kids in/out of the back though?

He can climb into his seat himself now, and I'm thinking if there is plenty of room in the back it shouldnt be an issue. But of course I could be wrong, I would need to see one. From the photos it *looks* roomy enough in the back.

Thanks for the reply 👍

I'm sure there's decent room being on the E-Class platform.
They certainly look very good value for money and are good looking cars.

There's a grey one on auto trader for £20k, I think it looks great. Very much open to other suggestions which might better suit my needs though!

Aside from the usual German suspects:
-V60 Polestar
-Jaguar XF V6S.

Mind you, this latest gen XJ is a lot of car for the money and you'll get far better mpg than the old V8.

I'd be looking at a 3.0d in one of these flavours -

E350d
CLS350d
XF S
XJ
530d
430d
There is also the left field choice of a Ghibli but they don't offer as much room inside compared to the above and have short service intervals.

Happy shopping!

Cheers,

Chris

Jag hadn't been on the radar, but I do like the look of that. Thanks for all of the other suggestions too, appreciated.

You'll have no problem selling a diesel in two years time, the E400 is the same drivetrain as found in the C/E43 minus the AWD.

If it's space you want you could always go for the CLS with the same drivetrain:

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202108266...

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202109287...

With your usage a E350cdi in Premium Plus spec would be a good option:

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202112060...

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202112130...

Or the CLS in AMG Line Premium Plus spec:

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202111129...

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202109117...

If you want similar performance to the E400 but diesel economy the the 640d in coupe or Gran Coupe spec is the one to choose:

I’m very much torn between a £30k CLS and a £30k CLA.

CLA is the newer car with a better screen but a £30k CLS is a £60k car albeit slightly older with older tech too.

Have you sat in both? The CLA looks good in pictures but is pretty cramped. You are talking about a car on the A-class platform (CLA) vs E-Class platform (CLA). Space and refinement I imagine are quite different.

I’ve only sat in a new CLA and to be honest I was pleasantly surprised at how I didn’t feel claustrophobic in it and with a decent spec it’s quite refined.
I’m all over the show with what my next car will be but I’m thinking comfort and agility are relatively high on the agenda

They're very different cars the CLS is a clear step up in terms of quality also NVH/ride will set the CLS apart as well as the 3.0d engine.

To be fair I was needing a family sized car but liked the engine in the CLA45. Reality bit so I got a Ghibli V6S instead.

I’m surprised how little difference in price there is between a 2019 CLA and a 2018 CLS

Evening all. Thanks again for all the suggestions so far. I am still constantly checking the lease thread in the vain hope that something will come up, but that's not looking good, so buying is looking more likely by the day.

Some man maths has allowed me a slight budget creep, so £30k is within reach now. I've been looking at S5 sportbacks as I liked my 2 door so much.

Also quite drawn to the Kia stinger especially considering the 7 year warranty.

Trawling auto trader I've also found myself looking at Volvo's a lot more. Yes, I'm a bit all over the place. Anyone have any real world experience of the S60 B5? This *seems* a good option?

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202109026...

Again, I really appreciate all the time taken to respond. It's a big purchase for me so want to make sure I've covered all bases and don't miss anything!
