So just a bit of window shopping on a Friday as you usually do and then something came into view that i didn't think was possible and now its set me thinking.

I currently own a 435d GC (MSP) - low miles, fully loaded and had a part ex figure of 18K. I have a RS Megane that is worth approx 10-14k

And yesterday evening, I saw an R8 for £39k - v8 R Tronic. Black / Carbon and very tasty. Now selling both mine puts me in shooting distance of the R8. I have more than enough savings to buy it outright and probably a cheap fiat panda as a run around.

Running costs don't bother me at all - not a question of affordability involved. Just really should i do it? What pitfalls are there to owning a v8 R8?? I mean i can't see them staying a 30k car for much longer?? (there are cheaper low 30k cars out there). I mean the kids don't need to go everywhere with me right??

Would i be daft not to buy it?? biggrin

Buy it life is to short. This is coming from someone who set out to buy a £7k kit car and ended up buying a GT4...
So I’d like to think I am pretty good at man maths when it comes to car buying!

Get it bought! great, great cars and the gearbox isn't as bad as people make out, you just need to some spend time adjusting to how it works best.

Cheers,

Chris

If you don't need the practicality get it done, however if money isn't an issue see if you can stretch to the V10. That's just my preference.

Great car though, you'll love either the V8 or V10.

The only cause for concern would be running costs, as that's a non issue I cant see why not.

Get it bought and enjoy it.

If you're ok with a two seater and can afford it, yeah, go for it.

You have a choice of manual or R-Tronic (single clutch automated manual) in the sub-£40k bracket, I'd suggest thinking carefully / test-driving both, rather than plunging into one just because you've happened across a nice-looking example.

Buy it. If you don't, you'll regret it. Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but soon. And for the rest of your life.
If you don't like it, you can always sell it.

Yes you should buy it.

But I'd be paying an R8 expert/anorack to look it over before purchase.

I'd have a test drive of it first - you might not like it, especially as you might be now used to torquey turbocharged cars, the v8 R8s require a bit more winding up to get a move on. Nothing worse than buying a car then not liking how it drives.

Here are the torque to weights and rpms of the cars in question

BMW 435d GC - 266 lb ft/tonne peak @ 1500 rpm
Renault Megane RS (assuming 250 bhp version) - 181 lb ft/tonne peak @ 3000 rpm
Audi R8 V8 - 191 lb ft/tonne @ 4500 rpm

On the other hand, I'm sure the R8 will make up for the slight torque defecit with a fantastic engine note!
