I'm seriously considering driving the P&J to Malta and back, probably would need to have it serviced in Germany on the way back. Anyone here done the trip. Tips, comments, suggestions?

Take a long run up before driving across the Med...

And there are no drink-drive laws in Malta.

I own property and live on Malta part of the year.......

The Maltese police take a more relaxed view than in the UK, but it is still a VERY serious offence if caught, punishable by prison in extreme cases, also speed cameras are starting to be introduced, hidden at the exit to the duel carriageway tunnels near St. Julians and on the right hand side climbing out of Xemxija on the road to to Mellieha, the speed limit here being 40kph approx (28mph)...

There's got to be a ferry from somewhere in Italy and your comment explains the erratic "quality"

You brave man unless the roads of Malta have changed since 2001 i remember them being very poor, by our standards, with plenty of pot holes ect, the Island as you probabily know is very small and even the well kept roads are not the place for a car with the performance of the Tuscan... IMHO of course

I have family on Gozo, sister island to Malta.
Drove from Manchester, through France to Italy where we traveled by ferry to Malta.

Roads are not the best, the drivers over there will tend to try & drive in the shade.

Id be worried out bottoming out, some of the pot hole can be quite big. Also the avalibity of optimax, if you use it.

When were you thinking of going?

Ps we use a landrover defender & towed a boat

We'll be going for a flying visit in September as I need to understand the housing and rental market but will visit in late summer of 06 properly. By all accounts looks like I need to be going in a Hummer

The roads in Malta are improving and being upgraded greatly from how they used to be ten years ago, although still poor by UK standards, and very poor if you get off the beaten track....

This was one of the conditions of EU membership last year, along with gradually updating the ancient british bus fleet, which I think is a cying shame as most tourists love 'em, they are an integral part of the island imo.............
