Best B road car for 2022?
Discussion
Having just watched Harry’s honest review of the 992 GT3, it got me wondering what everyone’s perfect B road car is for the UK? I’m looking at options for Spring 2022 and having just chopped in both a 991.2 GT3 and a GR Yaris, what would you recommend?.
To add some context, I loved the GT3, the engine was glorious but it was probably a little too much for the B roads I enjoy. The GR Yaris I loved too but it wasn’t quite special enough to want to keep long term. Previous to those I had a 991.2 C4 GTS, and that was a great all rounder but lacked a bit of theatre engine wise.
I’m seriously considering a GT4 or 718 GTS, or maybe ordering a 992 GTS (yes, I know there’s no chance of getting that for a while). But thinking beyond Porsche, what would you have? Budget is flexible, would like to stay under £100k but would go higher for the right toy. I’d prefer manual and a NA engine, but open to all options.

It also depends on how good a fast driver you are. For whatever reason (either too cautious or not talented enough or not been trained) I find it hard to do things like let the tail end slip out under control so I'm sure many B-road weapons would be too much for me. For someone like me with limited ability I think a gen.2 997 Carrera 4S would be best which remains relatively light and nimble but has the (then) new multi-plate clutch four-wheel drive system

After seeing my first one in the flesh the other day would an Alpine a110 meet the brief ?
It sounded good, looked good, nice size/proportions and i recon would be great fun on B roads

Auto and turbo'd, but 355kg lighter than a 718. Absolute hit with pretty much all the reviewers

Buying new, and “within” budget, MST Escort for me:

And a Honda S2000 for when the sun shines.

Porsche 911 993 Carrera 4 Cabriolet (I was looking for a hardtop, but couldn't find any). Normally aspirated, manual, and aircooled. Not too much power, but still plenty, with 285 bhp in a 1320 kg kerbweight. Surefootedness of AWD. Should be reasonably reliable and cheap to run for what it is, and it won't depreciate. Convertible could actually be more fun - imagine blasting down B-roads in spring and summer with the roof down. Lovely!

Or, you can go a little older with this 964 Carrera convertible in a lovely bright Guards Red

I'll try and think of some others, but this is what popped in my mind at first.

On the upside you've got 100k to spend, which gives you so many options, but on the downside you're coming from a GT3, with probably the best NA engine fitted to a modern production car. I think most motors will feel tame after that.
Would you feel a bit short changed in a 'lesser' Porsche? The 981 GTS can be had for 50 odd grand - flat 6 howl and NA throttle response, fast enough to be interesting, but not bonkers quick so you can enjoy more moments with your foot through the floor. Mid-engined too, so it might feel a bit different to the GT3? However, if you're able to get a 718 GTS 4.0 quickly then that would be better. Engine sound aside, I believe the general consensus is it's the better car overall.
I've never driven one, but I'd suspect a supercharged GT86 or MX-5 would be an absolute riot.
An M2 would be pretty quick over a back road.
Given your budget and the future of ICE being uncertain, I would take this opportunity to tick off some truly special cars if possible. Could you stretch to an F430? Gated manual, glorious V8 howl... Conscious they've been rising recently, though.
Really hard to decide given the options. What's important to you? Speed, noise, tactile handling, beat the road into submission, aesthetics...?
Edit: You seem keen on Porsche, what about a 981 Spyder?
