All that moaning about how dangerous the farming implements were and he chops his thumb off in the kitchen laugh

Know how he feels. Self amputated my right thumb when it caught between the chain and cog when cleaning my fixed wheel bike. Had to wind the pedals back with my other hand to release what was left.
Strangely didn't hurt. Operation to re attach, but has never been right since.
Have had to adjust to try to be left handed now.

Slicing potatoes with a mandolin, not the musical instrument I hope.

How much wine was involved.

I knew a guy who sliced his thumb off with a table saw. They sewed the thumb and his hand to his abdomen for a few months to try to stabilise the blood supply (not really sure how that would help) but it didn't take and the thumb apparently had to be re-amputated. I only knew him vaguely before the accident and slightly less vaguely afterward. He was clearly quite self-conscious about it initially and would try to hide it by planting his hand in his pocket or whatever, but I think he's accepted it now. It didn't seem to have any effect on his ability to hang around by the pool table at the office...

Is there any truth in this - or is it just a load of internet pollex?

Horrible. Sorry to hear that. Even the partial loss of the use of a thumb must have significant consequences.

Still riding?

It's true that he's injured his thumb, but amputated is a big exaggeration He's just pared a decent slice off the ball of his thumb

Not the whole thumb then. They are dangerous things...I have and use one. It would have to be set at a huge size..not even sure how to do it.,

Chap I know lost a thumb and a finger when he tried to grab a squeaky aux belt whilst hungover and not thinking properly. Not pretty.
