Lunatic American I reckon, just on a power trip. Quite disturbing someone could kill 9 people at random from a fair distance away (not actually sniper distances away, but that's a technicality) and just carry on killing. One of the reasons I don't want to live in the States.

There is some seriously weird stuff going on in the states - don't think they ever found who was responsible for the anthrax cases. I recon there are two people involved in the sniper case - one to shoot and one to drive the van.

Could be a she.
Scary stuff. Judging by the news tonight, pitch forks and flaming torches are being readied together with a portable gallows.
Throws up the possibility of some innocent getting stuffed for being in the wrong place the way they were talking on TV.

Hmm judging by the snippers accuracy I would say they've been military trained. So possibly a loopy ex-forces / awol. Or a loopy extremist (again military trained by the greatest nation in the world - God bless America!!)

most likely, but they have many NRA gun clubs there and the extremists can practice there until they get good. Hope this is a line the FBI are taking as the guy is killing them from about 100 metres so not real sniper stuff, more practice range distances but he/she is doing it with single shots.

Still we all have these looneys popping up too often lately and guns are too available to the lunatic fringe

I think it will be some sort of trailer trash, not bright enough to get into the army type. No doubt he got a parking ticket and reacted badly, and decided to 'Go To War'.

Hmmm... seems a bit of a loon to me... although hh/she does seem to have a sense of irony.

Americans: "this is the safest place in the country, you are completely safe here"
Sniper: shot person in 'safe place'

Americans: "the sniper is not professional, if he was any good, he would shoot people dead with one bullet in the forehead"...
Sniper: Shoots person with one bullet through the head

hmm...?

Must be bloody horrendous. Reminds me of the storyline in Dirty Harry. I'm really surprised I can't recall this hasn't happening before.

You've got about 200 million firearms in the hands of the public out there; repeal of any gun laws would make prohibition look like a pretty darn successful policy.

My belief is that these things breathe on the oxygen of publicity: difficult to control, questionable whether it'd be desirable either but cut off this nutter's publicity and you never know...

Fascinating that the debate on gun law - according to one report yesterday - hadn't been significantly broached in the aftermath. We'd have banned tin openers by now but hey, that 'last frontier' concept hoves large in the conciousness of many Americans.

Think I'll go to Morecambe Bay next summer.

I think the white van clue is bogus - white vans are everywhere and of course you're going to drive fast away from the scene of a shooting...

Im not trying to second gues the FBI etc here but as I see it this Sniper is most likely:

Not a serial killer in the traditional sense. He or she is killing far too frequently to fit into known killer types. The Kill, get off on it,feel empowered remorse, feel low, kill again for the lift, is not being followed.

Not alone, some of the reports have said two men in a van. More than one person involved means that serial killer less likely.

Militia type action, a possibility. Though the victims have not formed any sort of pattern. The fact that they are being murdered so close to the seat of government is probably the purpose of the killings.

Al-qaeida type group/cell is another likely culprit for the same reasons above. It takes few resources to carry out attacks like this, but the effect is almost felt as much as a large scale bombing.

whatever/whoever it is, it is not really a fault of the lax gun laws. I know where to buy guns in the UK, if I had a mind to. I am luckily not a nutter (IMHO), it is the nut that pulls the trigger that is the problem not that guns are available.

He's probably an anti-gun protester and thinks by randomly shooting people he will get the US government to ban guns.

I think all the victims' families should sue the US government for not banning guns and hence facilitating this "madman's" killing spree.

I heard on the radio that they are giving people safty advice like, when filling your car leave the door open to present less of a target but this is not going to help if the sniper is good enough to kill people with one shot to the head

What's a 'Sniper distance' anyway (>500m?)

... and this has restarted the debate as to whether americans should have 'the right to bear arms.'
Doh,... bit late now, methinks.

Top shot this guy/gal, who ever they are.

If it turns out to be a muslim terrorist, that will really put the cat amongst ther pigeons. At this stage though, my money is on the wacko militia type.
