It’s been an appalling year for me (as I’m sure it has been for many) - my mum died the day after we moved into a new house (the purchase of which was a nightmare) we at least in part bought so we could look after her, my stepdaughters dad was killed in a motorbike accident 3 days later, my 10 year old daughters godfather died the week after that, we’ve lost 3 cats to old age and one dog.

I have obviously done as much as I can to help and comfort my family, but I kind of want to buy myself a ‘present’ to say ‘you’ve got through it’. I know this might sound a bit selfish.

Any ideas? Max budget 1k. No track day stuff, as I race anyway. I’m kind of thinking of buying an old kids trials bike like a Yamaha TY to restore and then use as a paddock bike.

My god what an awful year, I'm so sorry for all your losses. It might be worth having a little weekend break in the new year, not necessarily abroad but a hotel somewhere nice, just an idea. Hope you have a good Christmas and a better new year!

Not a bad idea. We had a double wedding cancellation in 2020, eventually getting married in September 2020 in a registry office (which to be honest we both kind of liked, no pressure, and thankfully my mum was still alive). We had a mini honeymoon in a posh local (Lake District) hotel. We’re both utterly, utterly worn out, as I’m sure many are.

Many thanks for your best wishes.

I'm a bit of a watch nerd, so personally I'd consider perhaps getting yourself a nice watch, either something smart to wear on special occasions, or something a bit more rugged to wear every day.

Would serve as perhaps a nice reminder that time is precious when you look at it and that it was a treat for what you managed to get through.

I've just treated myself to a nice streaming hifi system.

Currently getting 6 hours a day use and is making WFH more tolerable.

OP, you've answered your own question. You want a bike to restore and tinker with. Hours of messing about and satisfaction and pride in the end result which you will use for years.

It's not selfish at all - you have to look after yourself as much as everyone else, and that's been an awful year by any measure.

Be absolutely entirely 100% selfish. Treat yo self - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t1FM4nExR5c

I’ve always been a big believer in buying / treating myself to something to something special every year. It’s ranged from cars to property to tech and Lego

Get whatever makes you happy and you really desire. Everyone needs a treat every now and then, and I’d argue now more than ever OP

Has coke and hookers fell out of favour nowadays then ? smile

OP last year I bought a good quality mountain bike, really enjoyed exploring the local tracks and trails over the last 11 month and got me fit(ter) into the bargain.

Whatever works for you but do it.

My suggestions are to spend the full grand on something you would never normally spend a grand on.

  • A High end pen
  • A brief case / travel bag
  • A herman Miller Aeron chair for the office
  • A coat/ jacket
  • A cool tool e.g. Stihl Kombi plus accessories
  • A nice piece of art /picture/ sculpture
  • Switch all your glasses to Riedel

Or a trials bike for yourself, get it in tidy running order and have a potter around with a local club. Pedal bike suggestion is good too - that gives you plenty of new opportunities to explore the locale at the drop of a hat, getting you out the house. Could even be an e-bike to help with the hills.

Potatoes

A thousand pounds worth of potatoes, evenly distributed to the poor and starving homeless scratching away trying to survive in our city streets, cold and wet and hungry.
The Salvation Army have facilities to boil them.

The potatoes, that is.

Not the homeless. nono

Nothing selfish about that fella. You need to look after yourself as much as you've done for others.

That said, just a thought - any go-kart open evening things around by you? Would a grand buy you an open pit lane pass for 6 months or even a year? That way you can just turn up and piss about in a kart, keeping the racing discipline separate. Plus, if you can get a dab of oppo on round the corner leading to the main straight, it'll be ste for your times but look impressive, and be fun to do anyway?

Alternatively - rent a boat on one of the Lakes. A grand will get you a very nice champagne boat for a weekend. Leave your phone on the shore and just enjoy a weekend out on the water with friends/loved ones/whatever works.

£1,000 will get you a very nice acoustic guitar (and electronic tuner, extra strings etc.) YouTube will teach you for free, both how to play in general and specific songs. Give it a year, less if you have any talent, and you will be able to entertain others as well as yourself.

yes Or build up an electric bike.

If it was me I'd be looking to take my wife away somewhere spectacular for a weekend. But I don't want or need a paddock bike! biggrin

OP if a bike is what you have in mind then definitely go for it, a grand doesn't go too far in many areas these days sadly so if thats within your budget and it's what you should definitely do it

My stepdad spent lockdown finally getting a chance to finish restoring an old Yamaha. He’d bought a parts bike to make sure he had enough spares to get the job done, that’s now being rebuilt too laugh
