Christmas Family Squabbles
Discussion
Just me and my OH this year again - to be honest I don't miss the family squabbles and angst. Neither of us have any living parents and all our siblings have families of their own so there is no need to go anywhere on Christmas day. We'll meet up with her brother after Christmas some time but other than that we have no Christmas obligations.
Looking forward to a couple of pints down the pub followed by going home and me getting on with the Christmas dinner.

We had a family bust up nearly two years ago, I don’t talk to most of my family and my wife doesn’t talk to most of hers.
Just us and the kids this year and some friends coming over on Boxing Day.
Not having to buy presents, cards and visit them to make false pleasantries.
Family’s, f
k ‘em.

Not much else to say really!
FIL is generally ok, the only big issue is he's a real life version of Bob Fleming, seriously he really is that bad. I wish someone would have a word, but it's not my job.
That aside i've got plenty of other stuff to do and don't give a toss what anyone thinks when I slope off to do it.

Just my wife, my 18yo son and me.
I fell out with my father some years ago after my mum died and he decided a solicitor would be a good way to try and get me to pay for my upbringing. No, I kid you not. He listed everything. I haven't spoken to him in years. He's written me out of his will but the sociopathic old git still sends me Christmas and birthday cards with a £50 cheque. Both the card and the cheque have gone on the fire for years.
Going to be great, we have tons of food and drink, no need to step outside for days.

I do my best to avoid the wife's family other than her parents, grandmother, brother and his kids. She has two cousins and an Uncle who i'm pretty convinced are involved in low level crime but can't completely prove it and to my eyes they are basically complete scum and I refuse to be in the same building as them. The wife knows my feelings very well, she tolerates them more because of her Grandma, they are her kids and grandkids.
I suspect the Grandma knows why I won't turn up if they are in the same place but turns a blind eye to it all.
Christmas day will be fine but there's an outside chance they will turn up at the parent in laws house on boxing day for a family gathering in which case I won't simply to keep the peace but i'll probably end up in the dog house with someone either way.

Do you never see your daughter on Xmas day? Not fair if you don’t.
I did once, her mother invited me to bring my daughters Christmas presents over so I could see her open them christmas morning, turns out it was only because she hadn't bought any, lost her bank card apparently.
Brother in law is a complete tosspot, alcoholic who has ruined the last 2 Christmases. Hopefully he has turned the corner and behaves this year otherwise I'll be takimg him outside for a stern word and we won't be joining the MIL next year.
Our morning is breakfast at ours with my mum, brother & nan.
Afternoon is lunch at MIL, sleep on the recliner then a small buffet for tea.
Boxing day - brothers for a buffet.
Next year we are doing lunch and inviting both families around, could be carnage.

I go for Christmas hijinks because the wifes family are physically incapable of having Christmas day without her mum or her dad starting some s
t, i find it hilarious the way they carry on.
Her mum thinks she is in charge and everyone has to do what she demands - i refuse on principle even if it does create an issue, i really don't care and to be honest i just stay out the way in the kitchen.
Her dad is henpecked and as such takes his wifes crap for as long as it takes him to have his first Guiness, then sets off with snidey little digs - usually in my direction - and likes to throw a mardy strop, which i usually just laugh at and go back to the kitchen.

I’m very happy for you both, but what i need from this thread is family squabbles that make what I am experiencing now pale in comparison. No more tales of bliss like this please.Looking forward to a couple of pints down the pub followed by going home and me getting on with the Christmas dinner.
Christmas this year with my in-laws and my brother / sister in law's family. Much prefer Christmas with that lot as my own parents are...weird. Sadly, I have to spend Boxing Day this year with them, which will probably result in me wanting to leave within about 3 minutes of arriving. My parents and other side of the family are chaotic. TV on at high volume with random programs, my nieces are usually around watching trash kids programs on their iPads, also at high volumes and my parents love to cross talk. That is, one will take to me, and the other will talk to my wife simultaneously in cross proximity.
I can't wait.

Not my family but a (school) friend's family.........
This was back in the 1980's. The time of Greenham Common

(for those too young to remember)
Anyway, the daughter was very big on both 'wimmin' and CND - spent months at the peace camp.
Come Christmas dinner she produced a box of 'CND' * Christmas crackers...... and the very, very old grandfather had a real hissy fit and actually refused to pull one, because 'it would be disrespectful'.
(Strange because he - the grandfather - had actually been a conscientious objector in the war)
* What the hell are 'CND' Christmas crackers I hear you ask...... well they are just like normal crackers but DON'T go BANG!

We always plan what we are going to do etc, then without a doubt my sister will changer her plans at the last minute so it means that someone will have to adjust theirs
This year I’m not planning on going to my folks as every year my sister makes it frustrating for all the other plans made

Am I the only one who’s managed 30+ years of Christmas Day celebrations without some sort of family bust up? We rotate through each side and we both get on very well with in-laws. In fact my parents and her parents get on even better than that to the point they were planning holidays together pre-COVID.
Unnerving.
Unnerving.
