Just a quick one that has saved me a few quid. My laptop is about 6 years old, its an early i7 processor so it should be fine today. Anywhoo, lately it has taken about 20 to 25 minutes to fully boot up. A quick look at task manager when booting showed the 2Tb disc at 100% for this time. Found the bottleneck. Replaced it with a 1Tb SSD at a cost of about £80 and it's like a new PC. 1 to 2 minutes to fully boot and disc usage is around a maximum of 50%. Best investment yet and saved at least £500 for a new PC.

I had a very old Dell. Great quality screen, but that was all. It has an 80GB HDD. It struggled with Win 7. I'd just bought an expensive laptop and wanted something to work with in Nero's and the like where I might have to leave the table for a few seconds. A 250GB SSD originally, and later a 500, revolutionised the thing. Mine was less than 1 min to boot, and everthing was so much sharper. Cost was zero as the SSDs were rejects from a desktop I no longer used, and then an upgrade of my main desktop.

Later upgraded from Win10 to Linux, and better still.

I bought an Acer i7 laptop second-hand this summer & put a 1Tb SSD in & did a clean install of Win11. It boots from cold in about 15-18 seconds. Astonishing!

1-2 minutes is still slow, I'd suggest a re-installation of Windows to get it in the sub 30 seconds.

This .

i7..... My i7 desktop boots to the desktop in around 10 to 15 seconds at most. The win flag logo doesn't get to finish animating one rotation.

Might want to look at removing apps you don't use or never intended to install, remove st like Norton security and any other real time av and firewall add-ons that win 10 doesn't need.

Brilliant that you have improved things drastically but you have scope for a lot better if you fancy the challenge. Oh and there are some good free tools out there to analyse your startup sequence / programs / services. Sounds like you are booting up the Large Hadron Collider there.

Happy Christmas.

Read this thread on iPad early this morning and just turned on my 18mth old ThinkPad (not known for being speedy) with "10th Gen" Core i5 and it booted from cold (fast start is disabled) to Windows desktop, including doing fingerprint ID, in 35 seconds. And that's getting noticeable longer than when it was new

I know you're 'new' here, but posters have been offering the exact same advice to speed up ageing computers for at least 5 years biggrin

Maybe the OP has only bought (or able to fit) a SATA SSD. Just wait until 2030 when he realises m.2 SSDs can be 10x faster again wink

Mine are all E-SATA (three in a PC) and I'm getting a 15 second cold boot to desktop.
