Mattresses

I’m not sure where to put this, but it’s related to my crappy back so health seems a good place.

We need a new mattress, but I haven’t got a clue were to start when looking for one.

I’ve got a fked back and wake up with a bad back most days, I’m sure it’s not helped by our cheap mattress.

I’m also fat so there is a bit of a dip compared to my girlfriends side! Other than losing weight, will a better quality mattress help with holding me? (I’m 20ish stone so not super fat as I’m tall as well!).

Anything to look out for when buying one? Things to avoid or is it one of those really personal things that is different for everyone?

I think it’s available in the UK. Has a medium + hard side, so you can swap as you feel. Lightweight, fantastic mattress. Probably took me about 3 or 4 nights to get used to it fully.

Sounds like you need a dual zone mattress. One side sprung to suit your body weight and the other side to suit your Mrs,

I tried a zip link mattress before, but it was bloody annoying having a zip down the centre and having something hard dig into your back.

I’d also consider buying two single mattresses and putting them onto a Super King base and adding a mattress topper to mitigate against having the two edges meet in the middle.

Get yourself down to a bedshop and try some out. Its the only way to tell.

I have a simba and I'm sure it's taken a toll on my marriage. She loves it. I think it's crap and has done my back in. In summer it's a horrible hot mess. Left it too late to return thinking I'd get used to it.

Literally sleeping on the sofa is more comfortable than sleeping on that hateful thing.

We have a Silent night mattress. I think the base is spring, but it has a thick memory foam on top which is excellent.

I have an eve mattress. What a load of crap. It is literally a bit of foam nothing else. It’s lost it’s thickness on my side as I’m a bit of a porker too.

Wife and I are about to start shopping for a new mattress as it’s ruining my sleep (I’ve never slept well and normally only get 4-5hrs a day at best)..

Like you I have no clue. Problem I find with going to a bed shop is you literally get 5 mins in a brand new mattress. So they all feel ok is in store. It’s 3-6 months down the line of usage you don’t know about.

It’s been said before but are Premier Inn style mattresses viable and/or available to general public?

Hypnos make the Premier Inn mattress and you can buy them (I think there's a link on the Premier Inn website). My wife and I were mattress shopping last year and reviews I'd read suggested that they weren't that durable (I'm guessing Premier Inn change them every 12-18 months or so).

The conclusion we came to is that it very much depends on budget, and the more you spend the better you get. We decided we wanted a Vispring dual tension mattress in the end, which would give her the firmer side she wanted and the softer side I wanted. They cost a fortune though and we didn't go through with buying one.

I’d agree that pillow top mattresses like the Premier Inns one aren’t worth it. Its much better to buy a mattress topper separately so it can be changed independently of the mattress. You can achieve a similar feel.

I also spend on stuff like beds, chairs and shoes. I don’t think you can put a price on your health. Plus expensive mattresses last longer. My last and only budget mattress that cost £350 went bad within 5 years. You could feel it deteriorating around year 3. My Hypnos mattress that cost £1200 is in its 4th year now and feels like new. The mattress topper is past its best, so that I will replace that soon.

For ultimate comfort and durability, you’d want a sprung divan base as well. Although in my current property, I needed under bed storage and couldn’t go with that option, I’ve had a sprung divan in the past and it was sumptuous.

I think spending about £3k (king size) offers the best bang for your buck. You will be able to get a decent quality mattress, sprung divan base and topper that will be durable and comfortable. Although of course it would be very easy to blow much more than £3k on the mattress alone!

I’m a fat biffa, we got a Tempur about 2 years ago and it’s wrecked already, it’s our second but I wouldn’t bother again.

Went to Dreams and got a Therapur ActiGel Response 2000 SK Mattress, very firm.

We both sleep like logs on it, no more sleeping on a hot pile of jelly.

We had a vi-Spring for 20 years and it was great. We replaced it with a Relyon ("just the same as a vi-Spring sir" said the salesman). It wasn't and tried to send it back after a month. They told us to try it a bit longer and then refused to take it back as it was over 3 months old. We chucked it out after 6 months for a Casper. That was a bit better but hot in the summer so chucked that out after a year for another vi-Spring. It as £5k though just for the mattress...

TL:DR - you get what you pay for. Buy cheap - buy twice (or three times in our case)

Might also be worthwhile looking at how you're sleeping.

I can get a sore back on a brand new, top of the range mattress. My 20 year old mattress has a 10 year old mattress topper and it's fine. Or isn't fine. It's all down to the position I sleep in.

If it's a lower back pain, then at least for me, it's because the lower back is compressed so lying slightly to one side with the leg of that side bent slightly and pushing my hips backwards slightly straightens the lower back a little. We're talking about just an inch or two but it makes all the difference. Ooer missus.

I bought a Hypnos from John Lewis for about £800 five years ago. Still happy with it.

I either rotate or flip it every 10 days.
