I've just changed employer, the old employee sent a wage slip with tax being in a minus figure for the last period of work I worked in the salary month.

New employee I got taxed on a BR code as the P45 never arrived from old twonks in time. They pay on the 20th and I got it on the 31st.

I open my wage slip and find I'm on the standard 1257L code yet been taxed a horrendous amount, presumably due to the tax amount with the first two joint wage slips?

I phone up HMRC and then they've put me on a code 397LX with me apparently owing more tax and they will start taking this until April 22.

Im ringing them back up in the new year to query this code but wondered if anyone has had this issue before?

Tax codes being adjusted is nothing new, and to be fair it is not always HMRC's fault.

No idea why last employer did a refund on tax.

I've had someone start with me in October who HMRC advised to give a sizeable tax rebate to in this months payroll. They never submitted a P45. I don't think it's correct but you really don't have a lot of choice but to pay it when you're working within the time constraints of a payroll run for a company.

Im not clear why though, is it because they don't know the new salary?

Most "instructions" from HMRC are automated these days. There is little human interpretation or judgement involvement. Expect more of this as the year move on.

They will (or should) know the salary from the payroll submission your new employer did. The only reason i can think of for you having a reduced personal allowance is because you either owe tax from previous years or because they think you have multiple jobs and have split your tax code accordingly. A similar thing happened to my daughter.

The quickest/easiest way to resolve this is to log in to your personal tax account and

Possibly the two jobs thing as P45 came after the last pay date with them. I was on a BR code for first non full month with new employer.

According to my previous tax years my tax says its all in order.

I'll call HMRC in the new year to work out what's gone wrong.
