His death, now being reported, seems worthy of a thread. He won’t be universally lauded of course but I think history will be kind. RIP

I was too young to know the politics of South Africa at the time as Desmond Tutu but can you even imagine where to start with changing this yikes

Eh? What did Tutu do that any reasonable person could deem him not to be laudable? There were some in the fight against apartheid whose tactics have been questioned but I’ve never heard of anything negative about Desmond.

RIP.

He also made it into U.K. slang. A few years back one of my son’s Uni friends was bemoaning the fact that he only graduated with a “Desmond”.

A what ? A 2.2.

A life well lived. What he was such a big part in achieving in S Africa via the truth and reconciliation commission was one of the global high points of the last 50 yrs.

The fact that it has all gone a bit t**s up since shouldn't detract from that.

Also a funny guy with a puckish sense of humour and quite a rorty laugh.

A broadly good and decent man who used his Anglican mission as a force for good in ending apartheid.

Many will argue that religion and politics should not mix (and many who should have known better at the time did). I believe, however, that both history and God will judge him to have been right not to cross by on the other side when he was confronted with a profound moral wrong

Well I can’t think of a better tribute for the man by keeping these slang phrases for a mediocre result in continual use.
