DB11 Car Play = Dire

I bought a new DB11 earlier in the year. Absolutely love it.

Apart from the in-car tech. Firstly the lack of a touch screen in any car in 2021, never mind a £200k car, is a big oversight.

But not being able to easily use CarPlay was really annoying me.

So I had CarPlay fitted by Aston Martin (rather than a third party). Although using the IDCore box.

So now I have CarPlay, although not great to use with no touch screen. But I can either have the radio on (from the original system) or set it to Aux to use CarPlay.

So if I’m listening to the radio, I can’t easily take a call.

Am I missing something or am I just stuck with an inferior in-car entertainment system?

From my experience with my DBSS before i sold.
As you said you are dealing with an inferior system. I find the AMilll much better in my current Vanq S.

No, you’re not missing anything.

I’ve had the AM (IDCore) CarPlay fitted last week to my DBSS and I am far from impressed.

Wireless CarPlay works great. Not having touch screen is a bonus for me. But the system not automatically switching means using the phone when not on CarPlay is a pain. Switching from CarPlay to the car system is a pain. Not being able to use the original USB connectors to charge the phone whilst using CarPlay is a pain.

And having the stupid extra USB cable, which you only need for 10 seconds when first setting the system up or, heaven forbid wanting to charge the phone, sticking out into the passenger footwell is more than a pain. If I can’t get this hidden under the carpet without making it obvious I will get the system removed when next in for a service in 12 month’s time.

It is interesting Djxn, that you are lamenting the absence of a touch screen.

I have just been watching a review of the latest Mercedes-Benz S-Class.
Considering that AM now have a much more extensive Technology Agreement with MB, perhaps some of the tech. in the new S-Class, will appear in future Aston Martins.

Sheer driving enjoyment is becoming far less important.
Just some of the new technology;

- Watch YouTube videos, or use the internet while sitting in the luxurious driver's seat, with hands off the wheel.
- There are still touch screens, one for each occupant, plus one which is removable, but needing to touch a screen has become very old fashioned. Interaction can be by steering wheel controls, touch pad or voice control.
- No need for parking skills. All automatic. There is even 'Valet Parking' at airports, but without a human driver. Just exit the car, and use your smart phone to leave the car to park itself.
- Adjust door mirrors simply by looking at them.
- Coloured interior lighting, which can automatically change colour according to temperature.

Hardly fulfils Aston Martins traditional roll, of being an exciting driving special occasion.
