App based banking
Discussion
Had Monzo as my main account for 2+ years. Never had a problem, customer service is better/more responsive, don't need to go into a branch ever, easier to authorise payments or transfer money, can freeze card temporarily if I misplaced it from app. It's just better for day-to-day.
I use Starling for 3 of my businesses and (as of today) my joint account with my missus. Considering changing my Monzo main account to Starling, just because it's easier to have everything in one place.
I have other traditional accounts but only so that I can get loans etc if needed.

We use Monzo for our joint account. Both pay in X from our principle accounts and all our DDs come out of Monzo. My wife also uses Monzo as her principle business account. Never had an issue with Monzo. Setting up the account was easy as were moving all DDs across. Much more functionality than HSBC and Barclays who our principle accounts are with.
I like the benefits with my HSBC account and we have our mortgage with them so no immediate desire to move away from them for my principle account at the moment.

I've had a starling account as my main account for a good few years, never had a problem and it has some useful features, like being able to spilt savings into different pots and being able to have a "bills" pot so all the money for the bills for the month are automatically transfered out on payday then the bills are paid from that pot. Would be good if they offered a linked credit card though.
We've used Starling for our joint and both our personal accounts for years now. We still have Barclays accounts as you can't close them online but there's nothing in them.
Pay cash in at the post office at the end of our road, take a picture of a cheque and pay it in on the app. Not really sure what I'd need an actual bank branch for.

Starling are now limiting cash payments into the Post Office to a maximum of £1,000 per year. A complete pain in the arse for me. Pay cash in at the post office at the end of our road, take a picture of a cheque and pay it in on the app. Not really sure what I'd need an actual bank branch for.

Been using First Direct for 25yrs and that is pretty much an app.
Sure I can go into a HSBC branch, but cannot remember the last time I did.
You can indeed, for example to pay in cheques over £500 or cash. But I also believe this can be done at a local post office. First Direct have strong customer service in my experience too.Sure I can go into a HSBC branch, but cannot remember the last time I did.

Limiting to £1,000 before you have to pay a miniscule fee. The hard limit is £5,000. The 0.7% charge is still far cheaper than the trip to Barclays would have been.boombang said:

They have a 24 hour number that goes straight though to a UK call centre where you speak to a real live human.
No tedious menus to navigate.
Amazing these days in its simplicity and effectiveness. I can’t think of any other company that lets you speak to someone without jumping through hoops.
Admittedly I don’t need to call them that often these days, but when I do…
Reading with interest (no pun) - our kids got cheques from great grandparents over christmas and I had some cash to pay in from a Facebook marketplace sale (requested bank transfer, annoying but anyway).
What a ball ache it was with nationwide, travelled 20 mins to nearest branch and cash machine wouldn’t accept deposits (branch was naturally closed). Had to drive another 40 mins in opposite direction to another cash machine which would accept.
Everything you request takes 5-7 working days (like a statement for our savings account when selling or house). Have been looking at Monzo and starling, already have Revolut but doesn’t accept cash/cheque which occasionally is needed.

I don’t use App based banking as my main account but have multiple accounts, I’d add one big caveat.
I recently had my mobile phone crap out and even though I could restore the replacement one from backup the bank security checks for my various accounts went from the trivial to the arduous (applying for card verification widgets that take time to post etc).
If you’re going purely mobile make sure it’s not tied to one device for the important stuff.
