Outdoor clothing for a youth.

One of my teenager sons needs some boots and country coat for walks in the countryside. Over Christmas he borrowed my boots and wore a cheap fleece. He looked awful, was cold and trashed my laces!

I suspect his feet and shoulders are now full size, so I don't mind buying him some decent stuff, but I don't want to spend a fortune.

I personally have a Musto check coat and Berghaus boots. He probably needs something similar but cheaper. Can anyone recommend a decent supplier? I have so far looked at A Hume (too expensive) and Trespass (looks too cheap).

Tresspass is in general pretty good for what your son needs in a jacket.
Boots very much depends on what fits him. A good waterproof coating can help cheaper boots that fit last a long tine.

I bought most of the kids stuff from the bargain basement of Gaynors in Ambleside. I couldn't see the point of spending a fortune on something that would be grown out of rather than worn out. Boots were usually Meindl from George Fisher in Keswick, as they have a generous trade in scheme on kids boots.

Go Outdoors are pretty good, they should be one nearby it their online stock is reliable. Boots wise I’d go for fabric boots like Hi-Tec or Peter Storm, something with a goretex type membrane, if they get muddy, fabric boots are much easier to maintain and clean plus they’ll likely have a more flexible sole, if he’s walking in the country rather than up and down, they will be much comfier than stiffer “mountain” boots. Jacket, whatever they have in stock that fits. Something insulated again with a waterproof membrane will do the job but it’s mostly about layering clothing rather than one piece of clothing that can do it all.

This, assuming you're staying above zero. Also my Trespass ski jacket did good service for many years, no idea about the current stuff, though.
