The time has come to sell on our 2 cars and switch to something we can share that suits family needs (we'll be swapping from an Audi A4 Avant and a Honda Jazz!).

Mrs SS9 wants something tall hence the 'SUV' suggestion rather than an estate. I think this is on the basis it'll be a more comfortable journey with easier loading/unloading and a bit more spacious. Whilst I love the Audi, I can understand why she's saying this. We have 2 kids, so 5 seater is fine.

We do enjoy holidays by car (across UK & the continent), and have found the Audi Estate gives us the space we need - on this basis I'd want to switch to something with similar or more luggage space.

Main criteria:
- Budget around £18k
- Reliable
- SUV style, Isofix, parking sensors
- I'd prefer something relatively new (e.g. 8 years old max - under 70k mies). We'd like a few years out of this, we probably do no more than 6k miles per year
- Something relatively quick (sub 9 sec 60), and ideally petrol.
- At a push, I'd love to keep to 4 wheel drive

This feels like relatively broad criteria, but nothing is really jumping out at the moment. Suggestions/ownership experience welcome.

I hadn't actually looked at either of these - I think mainly because they seem a bit big! Thanks for the ideas though.

I suggested those as you want a big boot, next size down and you will be lucky if the boot is any bigger than an A4 other than in height

Thanks. It might be that for the 1-2 fully loaded trips we do each year, I just buy a roof box or something if that means having a slightly more practical car for 90% of the year.

Loads more options if thats the case then! Kia Sportage, Mazda 5 or Skoda Karok if it was me. Possibly a Volvo XC-60 depending if I could find a good one in budget

edited to add you could get a brand new top spec Dacia Jogger for that budget. probably better equipped than the above with one of the biggest boots available. It will almost certainly be my next car

Suzuki Virata. Can get a nearly new one on your budget (less than 2 years old), or slightly older to get 4 wheel drive and a higher spec. The 1.4 booster jet isn’t going to set hairs on fire but it will get a move on when pushed and return nearly 50mpg when driven sensibly.

They are quite small compared to some f the suggestions and not actually very good, read a few group tests and it always gets beaten. If you went that small you'd be better off with a Duster

We’ve got a 21 plate Mazda CX-5 GT Sport as our family car. It’s a lovely thing to drive and we’ll equipped. £18k might not get you the GT Sport but the CX-5’s are generally well equipped even on their base spec stuff.

How’s the performance? Does it feel nippy or sluggish? I’m coming from a 2.0TFSI Audi estate which I’ve always likened to a family version of a Golf GTi, so I’m hesitant about too much of a step down.

Look at the Peugeot 3008. I had one as a rental car recently and was impressed with the package. I'd prefer this to something like a VW or BMW soft roader. If it is too large then the 2008 is an option, nice styling but not sure about the drive.

I just traded in the wife’s CX5 Sport Nav 2.0

It’s very well equipped and a decent enough car that’s fine for urban running about, however at motorway speeds it has absolutely no torque whatsoever.

Most of, if not all, the cars suggested are likely to be slower than your current car.
