Sold car, buyer wants money back
Discussion
Theoretically, caveat emptor should suffice, and that would be the end of it. There was a recentish thread on here where the buyer won, on similar grounds though, so your mileage may vary.
You could just take it back, as that would please the buyer, and end the matter. Have you thought of taking it back, and refunding minus the costs you incurred? If you are feeling particularly savage, offer him the money back that would represent the value placed on a 30 odd year old Ford that's never had new panels

As long as you have not mis described it then legally you should be ok.
The fact you know the buyer and don't want to fall out over the deal though is a whole other issue which probably comes down to you either take the car back and refund and maintain the relationship or you stand on and refuse the refund and the relationship comes to an end fairly swiftly.
I sold a car to a friend many years ago and thereon after until he sold it he seemed to think I should care whenever there was something that needed repairing and would tell me about it like it was my fault. I swore never to do it again.

I feel for you, made the same rule for myself back when I had forecourt.Edited by Jamescrs on Thursday 30th December 14:21
One friend was telling everyone around the curry table about the large repair bill he'd just had on "that car that he sold me" as his eyes went in my direction.
I bit back saying, how about thanking me for the 18 months trouble free motoring you've had before the repair?
Lost that friend, did mates rate for him also!!
Yup, never again.
Guys all please calm down, I asked a question to people who may be able to help advise that all…and I got a good answer with useful links. It’s the first time I’ve sold a car privately and other than the CAB I thought this forum would be a helpful bunch….
Sorry if this k8nd of post come up regular but for me this was my first ever post on here.
The buyer continues to insist on money back saying he’s found paint defects all over the car and a wing stage line he’s not happy with……30+ photos we’re provided with close ups and the buyer chose not to view….I’m just so torn as I know them but I also did not false advertisement nor am in a position now to take the car back….it’s very stressful tbh…

Did this buyer that you apparently know not view the car in person prior to driving it away? Or was this some sort or remote sale?Sorry if this k8nd of post come up regular but for me this was my first ever post on here.

I'm assuming the former, in which case it really is sold as seen and tough luck to him.
I'm sure many of us have bought a used car privately in the past that once home, little issues are found that for whatever reason just weren't seen when viewing but I'm afraid its just tough luck.
The buyer should spend a proper amount of time inspecting before handing over the money.
Stand your ground, assuming there was no mis-selling, or lies told, you've done nothing wrong.

The toughest decision you have is whether you want to keep this person as a friend. That will decide what you do.Sorry if this k8nd of post come up regular but for me this was my first ever post on here.

He chose not to view and bought from distance on the basis of many photos and also he has seen 2 of my previous show cars so “took it on trust” ……I didn’t mis describe and pointed out a few minor paint issues, he’s just now saying there are things all over the car he’s not happy with…
