Have just bought a new MacBook Pro M1 running Monterey and Safari .
I used Adguard on my previous MBP but it will not block ads on new system.
Have spoken to Adguard support who are unable to come up with a fix that works .
Any suggestions as to an adblocking program that will work with my new system .

Need it out and about or just at home? If the latter it really is worth investing in a raspberry pi (a cheap zero would do with Ethernet micro usb adaptor) and run pihole. Has the benefit of blocking ads for all devices, no slow browser extensions needed.

Does the Brave browser work on a Mac?

I've got it running on phones, tablets and a desktop.

Works perfectly, no ad's, no pop ups.

Opera has an adblocker that I understand should solve your problem (I'm not a Mac user).

Yes. Brave works perfectly on a Mac. No ads on any sites/YouTube etc.

Also Qwant works well as an alternative search engine to Google and throws up better uk search results than duck duck go etc

I use 1Blocker in Safari on my MacBook Pro M1 and works fine most of the time. Some sites struggle to load properly sometimes but you can pause blocking. I've never come across a perfect blocker because sites of course constantly look at ways to avoid them or break the page so you have to disable them.

I think uBlock Origin is the best but it doesn't support Safari

Firefox as browser, uBlock Origin add-on and Pi-Hole on a simple raspberry pi on the network as DNS server.
