Someone down my road has an untaxed vehicle and it isn't insured either. The son in that household takes the car out at night. I only bothered to check because he always looks like he's about the commit a robbery - lengthy routine looking around outside before driving off and hides in his smartphone whenever anyone is walking past! Two questions. 1. why isn't this picked up on ANPR - i am in London and you would think every main road is checked 2. if I report it to the DVLA will it just go into their virtual recycling?

Report it online to the police. Don't tie up 101. Don't say you've checked Askmid, just give the VRM and tell them it's used regularly. Don't be surprised if the paltry number of plod assigned to your neighbourhood have bigger fish to fry.Do your curtains ever stop twitching?

Can report it via the website, easier than calling 101. Time dates etc help. Although just because it’s not on the MID doesn’t mean it isn’t insured. Although hopefully you didn’t breach data protection when clicking the box to say it was your vehicle you are checking

You don't have ANPR on every street corner, I think you are confusing it with CCTVThey certainly don't (not in my town, anyway) act on any untaxed/mot cars passing through and i presume they don't with insurance, either- certainly not routinely.
London ANPR probably more for congestion/ULEZ and traffic infringements.
I was watching one of those traffic cop programs on TV. Guy gets stopped for not wearing a seat belt. No licence, no MOT and no insurance. From memory he got an extended ban plus a £150 fine (a fraction of the cost of insurance even if he had a license). I think they confiscated the car but as an MOT failure was probably worth next to nothing. I bet he drove to the court in his next car!

The ANPR cameras you have on the main routes leading in and out of towns, are i am fairly sure, only checked by police if they have a particular interest in that vehicle- wanted person known to use/drugs-that sort of thing, and so they tap in plate and its flagged up if passes.

Oh, I have been. But luckily I was insured. That's what I pay insurance for.But I don't go out cruising local housing estates, noting registration numbers and then spending precious time on the internet to find out if they're insured or not.
