I haven't got beyond nosing on here and Autotrader and getting the odd idea off drives when out walking but the past six months have done a decent job of persuading me there's no point spending a small fortune outright or monthly for the miles/usage I'm doing right now.

If I wanted to spend up to £5K but would be fine with something cheaper/older if it was in good condition and reliable what would people be looking at out of stuff like a CRV/RAV4/Forrester/RX/X-Trail please?

I had a Freelander years ago and always liked the driving position.

Not interested in the £5K FFRR that'll bankrupt me when it breaks smile

Thank you smile Hadn't really considered Kia and Hyundai but they seem a lot of car for the money.

My last few cars have been new but WFH meant it felt a no-brainer to save the monthly lease cost when the lease was up.

Interesting what passes as "excellent condition" these days going off the photos on here and AutoTrader!

Yeah funny you say that as there's an old boy down the road who goes for his paper or whatever every morning in a silver RX of about that vintage.

Likewise was out earlier and driving behind one of the "boxy" CRV's on a 55 plate and honestly just from looking at it I'd probably have snapped his hand off there and then for £2.5-3K.

Problem is those ones never seem to be the ones that come up at the cheap end on here or AT.

Ironically like a true hypocrite there was a really nice 2008 S-Class at a local dealers that got me thinking.

Absolutely scary how much car that is for the money but the potential to be utterly ruinous too.

I’d throw a Nissan Murano in for consideration. I had one for a bit before my current car. 3.5 V6 engine, same as in the 350Z but detuned slightly. It was a lot of car for the money, I only paid about 5k for mine. Very comfortable, plenty of toys, seemed reliable and didn’t cost fortunes to service. (Although certain parts are expensive because they have to be imported from Japan, I believe.)

Far from economical, that would be the biggest downside.

Q7 smacks of money pit though.

Having got rid of the lease and borrowing an 8 year old Mazda it's been a revelation that cheap motoring won't kill me biggrin

Go slightly bigger and get a Touareg. Plenty available in budget and tough as old boots in V6 TDI guise

Not that left field I could be very tempted but relatively few on AT or here.

You wont get much of a 450h for five grand.

Rx300 but avoid the se-l trim.

I am assuming the OP meant RX400H. £5K should get into one of those but beware of catalyst theft. Toyota/Lexus offer a product called CatLoc that is worth considering for peace of mind.

a £5k Rx400h will still be quite ropey....and the CatLocs are a waste of time, they rattle like mad and don't stop the angle grinders. Mileage on the 400h v 300 isn't that much better in the real world.
