Unfortunately the time has come, and my super cheap Cupra Leon will be returning to VWFS in the next few months. I have maxed out the extension period already, so this is now the goodbye to cheap car ownership cry

So the question and advice I am looking for is, what the heck do I get next?

I am sure prices within the next couple of years will start to come down in the general car market, but until then, we are all stuck with inflated prices. Lease prices in particular seem to be massively inflated, so it seems that the leasing route is not an option for now. So ideally I would like to be in something no longer than 3 years that will be fairly safe in terms of residuals.

- Unsure on PCP or Personal Loan. Fully aware the interest rates on personal loans are a lot lower, but I am working more on a monthly budget than an overall figure. Probably looking at around the £300-£400 a month mark with a £1500 deposit.

- Fairly similar in terms of performance. I had the Cupra 300, so anything circa 250bhp + I would be happy with.

- Automatic, as the Mrs is likely to drive it from time to time and she much prefers Auto's, as do I.

- MPG not a huge issue. Anything that can do over 25MPG would be fine. Now I am permanently WFH, I only plan to do around 10K a year.

- Fuel wise, not massively bothered. Ideally petrol/Hybrid.

- Something fairly modern with a Infotainment screen built in.

- Not massively bothered on shape of car (I.e. SUV or Convertible) as long as it can get 4 people in and out easily.

- As mentioned above, something that would hopefully retain a good value in 2/3 years time.

Hope thats enough to go by!!

Many Thanks in advance biggrin

I'd say a personal loan only you will know if the monthlies are to high.

A monthly payment of £300 over 3 years with £1500 down will get you a £12,000 car at 2.8 % APR. £400 will get you a £14,000 car. PCP depends on what deal you can get I suppose.

If you want something with good residuals, get something older that has done the bulk of depreciation and is maybe a bit interesting. Most cars will soon have either electric motors or derivative 2.0 inline 4 turbos - people will be hankering after 6+ cylinder engined motors with character.

I wouldn’t bet on lease costs coming down any time soon, if ever. We are at a new normal now.

I suspect that you are looking for a £30,000 car with a budget of half that, or am I reading the criteria wrong.

How about a brand new Toyota Corrola GR sport? Not quite the 250hp you are looking for but the 2.0 isn't really that slow:
