Will be used once a week for a 50 mile motorway round trip, a few weekend blasts in the Alps and 2 long holiday journeys per year.
2 children (10 and 8) and sometimes grandma joining the weekly round trip.
Comfort is important, but would like a bit of "sportiness" once in a while.
Willing to spend a bit of money if there is a chance of decent resale value.
If SUV then it would need to have 7 seats.
At a point in life where I want something special, something to look forward to drive and look back at fondly and say....we had one of those.

I'm looking for similar at the moment and Porsche Panamera seems to be high on my own list.

E class estate E55 or E63 with air suspension as practical choice.

Old roller if you want style, waftability and leather snorting in the lounge.

Add set of winter tyres if doing the Alps in the winter.

If you need 7 seats then what about:

VW Caravelle. Pretty cool and hold their money.

Range Rover. A lovely place to sit.

BMW 3 or 5 series convertible x 2. Convertibles are ace and everyone loves being in a mini convoy with radios etc.

911 can do kids that age, but it’s not clear of gran is additional in rear, or optional in front passenger seat

Not sure there is any people carrier like a macan etc that you will ever be thinking “I owned one of them”

Allready have a Merc Viano with all the trimings, so I am not keen on another bus. A proper american style minivan (Pacifica, Odyssey) is better as they are built for passanger comfort, unlike the european offerings that are commercial vehicles with carpeting and some seats.

The GL has crossed my mind, but its size and heft make it more suited to a big diesel, the 63 V8 is a bit useless there exept for the nice soundtrack.

Estate: Panamera, RS6 (C7), BMW 5er (maybe Alpina?)

Saloon: W222 S-Klasse. There is an Arnage T down the road for sale that looks properly cool, just need to work up the courage to consider it.

What am I missing?

Taycan Cross Turismo is epic if you can finance it as a business vehicle and take the tax advantage of electric?

Panamera Turbo / GTS much more special than any Audi as well - lots for sale at different budgets now and much less likely to attract unwanted attention than an RS I think

-Panamera Sport Turismo V8 Turbo S (± E-Hybrid engine) is a sporty occasional 5 seater (630/700 bhp).
-4/5 yr old Approved Used Bentley Flying Spur (previous model) is decent value and a bit more nimble in V8S guise than W12.
-Rolls Royce Ghosts looking decent value if you have the budget to run one.

  • If* you consider an Audi or Mercedes estate as special I guess an RS6 or E63 could be considered.
I can't think of any 7-seater SUV that I would look forward to drive or look back on nor look back on with nostalgia

No need to leave her at home. The boot is quite spacious.

Will you be buying in the UK or Switzerland?

I'll assume you are buying in the UK and will be paying UK prices, I have no idea about the Swiss market. What's your budget? I'm assuming as you are in Switzerland then you are loaded and money isn't really an issue for you.

Some ideas, favourites first

If the x5m came with a 7 seat option it would be a great option..

The gls350 would be a nice option but if you could stretch to a gls63 that would be the ultimate.

They feel huge for every day driving though.
