Evening everyone.. bit of a lengthy read ahead so appreciate it if you are still here at the end!

After various chats on here and elsewhere I decided to trade in my 2008 VW Passat Estate with nearly 200k on the clock for a 2014 Volvo V40 D4 at the start of December.. beautiful car fully loaded with spec and had plenty of power with reasonable economy (nowhere near proclaimed figures), cheap tax and comfort.. After 1000 miles I had a message on the dash to top up 0.5L of oil which I found a little strange considering it had been serviced prior to my ownership so topped it up and drove another 1000 miles to find the same message appeared.. had the car recovered back to the garage I bought it from and they said it had been underfilled during the service and that they had filled it correctly but wanted to drive for 1000 miles to confirm that was the only issue.. at that point, given a similar bad experience in the past with a Seat Ibiza I decided to reject the car on the grounds of not being fit for purpose as I wasn't prepared to risk it being a more severe issue that the V40's of that year are known for resulting in an engine replacement.. I'm now waiting for a refund on my deposit and close out of my finance agreement and in the meantime I have a hire car out of my own pocket for a week so... I am now on the hunt for a new car.. which leads me here..

I'm looking for recommendations on something nice, gadget and not horrific to look at! the V40 was great, loved it and was really comfortable for travelling around the UK and commuting although the boot could have been a bit bigger!

I'm scouring the net on night shifts trying to find something ideally within 100 miles of my home location in Suffolk. Been looking at the following

BMW 330D
Audi A6
Audi A5
Volkswagen Passat (Newer)
Ford Kuga
XC60 (Yes I know! but I do like the seats haha)

Ideally I'd like to be a bit higher off the ground but that's not a priority. I'm looking around the 2013-2015 age group with a budget of around £12k-£13k

I'm not sure at the moment with the inflated market whether to just buy a banger until the supply increases if it ever does or whether I should grab something now before the prices go too crazy.. I'm also unsure whether to just jump on the EV bandwagon as that seems to be the way things are going so should I just get ahead of the curve but they come at a premium!

I figured the wealth of knowledge and experience on here hopefully I'll figure out which direction to go

If you're still here at this point, fair play to you and any feedback is more than welcome

Having previously owned a XC60 2.4D, I can highly recommend them....ours was a 2009 drivE model, manual with cloth seats, but drove really well and averaged over 45mpg for the entire time we had it. The 2.4D was just a detuned version of the super strong D5.
Only thing that failed outside of regular maintenance was the electronic steering lock, that was good going for the 5 years we had it, regret getting rid of it as i wanted to scratch the Range Rover itch...stupid decision!

I feel a little bit burned after the V40, bit of a bitter taste with Volvo and I'm just trying to remember that its just a dud. I do love the XC60's I prefer the interior in the facelift but I'm wondering whether an older one wouldnt be so bad

If you like the V40 just get another one that doesn’t have a rogue drinking problem?

That's a fair point and I would be lying if I said I wasn't looking at them on autotrader as I type this but one thing I did find I made a mistake on was the size of the boot

V60?

Avoid the 2.0 VEA engine and go for the 2.4 5 cylinder. There are a few on Autotrader within budget, you’ll get a bigger boot and retain the excellent seats, I liked my V60 better than my old XC60.

Get a shed and wait for prices to go down, people are asking for absurd money at the moment, I was going to treat myself to a weekend car but it can wait until we return to some kind of normality.

I do like the volvo interior it's just a nice place to be! I definitely won't touch anything else except the D5.. Had a C30 with that engine years ago and it was brilliant. Was led to believe the D4 would be the same

I think you've just got to scour the market. There are a few gems but there is a lot of overpriced stuff out there. I sold mine at overinflated price but there was someone wanting to pay it (and very happy with the deal too)

I’ve got a v90 with a d4, it’s a brilliant barge.

They will come down when peoples’ affordability comes down around April. Inflation, energy prices and NI increase will hit a lot of people hard.

I'm sure it is. I'm also confident it'd be a lot nicer with the 215 bhp 5 cylinder unit. The 4 cylinder engine, although strong enough, just doesn't suit the car IMHO.

May be it's just me, but 0.5L every 1000 miles doesn't seem excessive.....

Theyve never made the current model with a 5 cylinder, the current D5 is just a 4 cylinder with a higher output. Its quiet and smooth to the point youd not know its a 4 as opposed to a 6 and only just perceptably a diesel. 190bhp auto diesel should be a boring combination but its not, so much torque its as easy to drive as anything else ive got with a V8, flat 6, straight 6 etc.

Some worthy options.

Q50 Sport you'll get a nice one in budget with low miles & a proven drivetrain as well as nice spec:

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202201071...

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202112160...

At your price point the new shape Insignia is a very hard car to look past they drive/ride well, they also have plenty of interior/boot space & you can get a well spec'd one with Andoid Auto/Apple Carplay for your budget.

The first one is actually in Suffolk.

Mazda6 Sport Nav the older 2.2d was one to avoid but the newer one is proving reliable & at the moment these are a good buy:

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202111159...

308SW GT Line added boot space with a nice looking well sorted car:

Leon SW FR Technology

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202111290...

Q30 Sport but being a normal hatchback the boot might not work for you:

Premium in Touch

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202111109...

The DS5 often gets overlooked but they're a very good car with a big boot as well as a nice interior the drivetrain is proven as it's in pretty much every Ford/Peugeot diesel.

SUV wise there's the QX50:

Do you definitely need an estate? A V40 isn't really an estate, it's more of a hatchback. All my recommendations below have a boot that's larger than a V40, even if they are a saloon. They also have similar performance, fuel economy and low road tax.

Get yourself across to Ilford and have a look at these three:

BMW 320d ED Plus

BMW 520d SE Touring

1 litre of oil in 2000 miles since being serviced doesn't sound excessive? The V40's of around that year had an issue with burning oil with many needing new pistons, rings and bearings.. that came from Volvo themselves when I spoke to them.. 2015 (65) onwards had the issue rectified
