My trickle charger got turned off while car was in my garage (I think I did in my hast to get away on holiday!). Car sat for about 4 weeks and when I came to turn the engine over it was dead, no door access, no alarm set with fob, zip! I have had it back on the charger for over a week now and still nothing. Checked all connections to battery etc but just puzzled.

Battery was brand new in August 21.

Any ideas? Can I just jump start it?

A ‘trickle’ charger doesn’t have enough ooomph to resurrect a flat battery.
I’d put a proper charger on it for a while and see where that gets you.

Get yourself a battery charger from halfords and charge it up properly first, you will probably find it will be ok.

Connect a known good battery to the fully flat battery and then connect the charger

Many chargers need to register a voltage before they will switch into charge mode

Connecting a known good battery to the flat battery will fool the charger into switching into its charge mode, second battery can be disconnected a short while later once the flat battery is producing some voltage

Don't jump start the car while its battery is fully flat as electronic components might fail when disconnecting the slave battery due to a sudden high voltage from the alternator

What he says

Have a lithium battery on one of my bikes, with the correct charger, some other owners have reported dead batteries, and the charger seeming unable to charge, trick is to either use a normal charger for a short time, to wake the battery up, and then connect the lithium charger, or add a 9v battery to the dead unit, as that will do the same thing ..... you need to have the battery accept the charge, and the charger to recognize the battery needs its help.

We quite often in our area have a mini power cut for a second or two.

If you have a battery on a trickle charger and this happens it will just switch off. I have lost two lawnmower batteries over the winters for this reason. You think it’s on a trickle charger and ignore it for many weeks or months but it is in fact not being charged and then the battery just dies.

I will always keep an eye on the car ones once a week for this very reason.
