Does anyone bother doing this?

I have an iPhone 7 that I have no problems with at all in terms of performance, other than the battery life, which struggles to do a day if a barely use it. It tells me that battery health is at 75%.

I don't want a new phone both becuase I don't want the expense and I don't like the environemental impact of discarding perfectly functional electronics.

New battery is about £50 from apple, which is fine. But is it worth it? Will the battery life still not be great i.e. do the newer versions of apps / iOS have a greater drain on the battery than they would have done years ago, am I still going to have a phone that I am charging twice a day?

I have an iPhone 7 Max or Plus?? for work which I have had from new so its around 5/6 years old, I look after my tech so other than the battery it is still new. Had a new battery put in it 2 years ago, just before Covid as it wasn't lasting the day anymore now down to 92% health, still lasts the day although WFH means it's on the WIFI which is less taxing on the battery.

Personal phone is a iPhone 12 Pro Max and to be honest they are both just as fast as each other and I would struggle to tell the difference in how they operate. The camera in the 12 is significantly better but that's about it.

My Aunt has my old iPhone 6s and still happily uses it, think its had 2 or 3 new batteries now. I say if you are happy with the 7 get a new battery but be warned I think the 7 will stop being updated with the new iOS either this year or next if that's important?

Worked well for me on my old 6s. I did the battery swap myself, so only £20, but it was turned back into a phone that could easily do a day of hard use.

I have the 6s to my son and got a 13 max pro. There is no functional difference that I can discern between the 6s and the 13, other than the camera, which is spectacular on the 13, and the battery, which seems to last forever on the 13.

Changed my 8+ battery last year

It was down to about 75% so wouldn’t last a full day.

It still needs a “top up” in the afternoon if I need the phone to last through the evening but it’s far better than it was.

I should now be able to get at least another 2-3 years out of the phone so the £50 battery change is a bargain IMO.

Yeah just to echo the existing stuff I had the battery replaced on my old 6S by apple and it added another 2 years of use to it for me before I swapped out to the 8.

I've replaced batteries and screens on a few of my wife's iPhones over the years - god knows what she does with them.

Not done one of the newer models though like a 10 onwards, but the battery on the older stuff is easy to swap, youtube is full of step by step guides.

From past experience - get apple to replace it , its not expensive.

My last iphone i got a shop to do it saving £20. A year later the battery burst with no warning splitting the phone in 2 . I dont think its worth compromising on the battery when you have no idea of the source or quality.

Agree with getting Apple to do it with a genuine battery, will breathe new life into what is still a very good phone.

Thanks for all of your info everyone, it is useful to hear your experiences.

Looks like it’s definitely worth going ahead and doing it via Apple themselves!

My only thought about how long the phone would be supported. I’m not bothered about things being the latest and greatest (hence why I still use an iPhone 7) but I wouldn’t want the phone to be any less secure than it could be. Do apply continue to do security updates for longer than they will update iOS on older devices?

I changed my 6S battery a few weeks ago with a replacement off eBay, it was hopeless before, but lasts great again now.

Apple will do the job for around 50 quid, I did my X 18 months ago and it's great. Any problems, they give you a refurb phone so no risk to the phone at all, you will have one - just back up fully before you go.

I'd either go to Apple if you have a shop nearby or, if you like the 7 but fancy something that's pretty much the same size but a good 25% faster plus some newer features then look at the 2020 SE

Yeah I have the new 2020SE its the same phone but faster, slightly better camera and just a bit better. Apple will also do a trade in on a 7 regardless of battery performance etc

The 7 will only be supported by Apple until this September which means you want to be replacing it early next year if security updates etc are your concern

Have an iPhone X which I need to change the battery in, think I will get apple to do it, costs £76 for them to do as need to post out a box and send it back with them, only downside is I’d be without a phone for a week but I’m sure I’ll survive.
I did ask a phone shop, but didn’t fill me with much confidence really, was £40 for him to do it in half an hour but would almost certainly be using junk batteries and last time I had a new battery through a small phone shop after about a week I started getting green lines all over my screen which could be unrelated but did seem coincidental. So although apple is almost twice the price at least you know your getting a good genuine battery and the job has been done properly and if any issues you could take it back to them.

They do (or at least did) operate a while you wait service for batteries at an Apple store you just needed to book an appointment. Might be more convenient

I put off doing it to a 6S for ages as I thought i'd muck it up if I did it myself, or Apple would takes ages and I'd be without a phone. Then one day bit the bullet, took it in to Apple store in Reading, went for lunch down the road and they texted my wife less than an hour later to say it was done. Should have done it much sooner!

I replaced the battery in my 8 recently - I was contemplating buying a new one but now happy it will last at least another year or two.

I did it myself with a battery of Amazon for about £15. Fingers crossed it doesn’t explode in a ball of flames…

I brought an 8 into the Apple store a while ago to get the battery replaced - £49 from memory.

They broke it during the repair (I was never told exactly how) so it was replaced with a brand new 8 for the price of the battery replacement. Bargain. The replacement lasted much longer between charges than the older one so a battery replacement would have been worth it alone.

Definitely make sure you have it backed up, and if you use any 2FA/MFA authenticator apps like Google's one ensure that you have a copy of the recovery codes somewhere just in case. Mobile banking apps are another one that can be a pain to setup again depending on the bank.
