I'm looking to do something in the
summer hols and thought I might try and record every Chimaera that I can trace through every possible source. eg by Year / Type / Reg / Colour etc.

You are going to need chassis numbers for it to make sense (and I bet there's one or two with new ones of those too) as lots are no longer on their original reg. I know mine is on at least it's third.

Bloody hell, that's going to be a colossal task! If there was ever a marque that changed colour or registration plates like the rest of us change underwear, it's TVR!!
For instance, my Griff's had 4 plates on it; the original, two separate X *** TVR plates, and my private plate. The current plate has been on at least 2 TVRs before (a Cerb and a Chimaera). So registration number won't be much use to classify with - you could end up counting the same car more than once. And how will you find the written-off ones, if the plate that was on when it was written off is now on another Chimaera? Tricky job this
You'll need to do it with the VIN if anything, and I can't see people giving you that, specially on the web
Now that's ruined your holiday plans and you have nothing to do, my garden needs some attention and I'm prepared to part with cash...

- (Seriously - been doing a lot recently !) I have thought of the pitfalls and it was only as an attempt to capture as many Chims as I can on their current registrations. I know these are often blanked out but hopefully if I contact the people they'll provide the info. If not, I'll still capture the type, colour etc. Once done, I'll publish the info on here and the PH community can advise me of any previous history etc if they want. It's obviously going to take some time but will hopefully build into a comprehensive record.

The number is just under 6000. Actually no one is really sure of the final numbers. Are you going to include the Chimari from Maylasia?
On a more serious note... I'm not sure that the Chim owners would welcome the publication of such details as it is a godsend to any car thief. There have been cases of TVR ringing (Mr Moon comes to mind). The TVRCC used to publish this data but were asked to stop.

What's of more interest to me is how many still exist.
It seems to me that the mortality rate of Chims is pretty high compared to 'normal' cars.
Anyone want to hazard a guess as to a percentage of that 6,000 that are still registered with the DVLA?

I'd guess that Mannings or Sunninghill could give you a reasonable estimate of the attrition rate, since they insure so many TVRs.
I've heard both 5% per year and 10% per year mentioned in the past. No idea if it's accurate or how it would compare with the attrition rate on say Vauxhall Astras though.

I doubt it. 10% would be ten a week-ish and mean that Chim numbers halve every six years. Wedge numbers have decreased by about 25% in twenty years or about 1%pa. Are chimp drivers no better than monkeys? BTW Steve's book seems to suggest a total production of about 4,000.

I guess this is the essence of what I'm trying to achieve. Purely research. I won't publish the info for the benefit of any ringers out there. If people want to tell me what they've got - mail me. If you want to check if I've captured your car - likewise.
Like I say, it's not going to happen overnight but will be an ongoing project. Guess I'm going to be busy !
