It's a cliché, but it's also true. Why are men so grumpy after about 40?

Work stress? A specific generational thing, that they were brought up to be stunted emotionally therefore have unresolved issues? A general generational thing, that the world has changed since their formative years and they don't feel as comfortable? Simply life is running out and it's not turned out as well as it might have?

Why are YOU grumpy?

The best definition of middle age i have ever heard is :

You're horny all the time but too tired to do anything about it.

For me it was the realisation I was never going to be a football star as i was too late. It did not matter that I have always hated football, it was the fact the ship had sailed.

Let's have some balance here shall we?

Why does it take 5 menopausal women to change a light bulb?

Well, BECAUSE IT DOES, RIGHT!

Because you realised it's all a total stshow and all means nothing.

From nothing, to nothing with no firm end date set.

Everyone knows their birthday but no one know their death day. If we did I bet we'd all live very different lives.

I guess its because beer costs more than it did when i was 19,
jeez ,todays women look far fitter,
but my wages went further ,and i loved hitting the chippy on way home after a night in the pub ,or affiliated club ,
the kebabs of today aint got the appeal of a saveloy ,chips and curry sauce ,
a footy match cost a few quid ,now its at least £25,
My bike or later car always had the tax in post disc ,
the milk float always had orange juice to buy when on way home at 6am sat morn after friday nites milf lady time ,
the pictures had one screen ,maybe two ,star wars or abba the movie ,i saw the latter ,all for the chance of a fumble ,took me 12 years to get to see bloody star wars on a cassette ,and yep i bought a sodding sony betamax ......!!!
now im in my 60's and do you know ,even with all this tech ,health and safety, media ,alexa ,hs2 ,much better beer and food
i still loved the jubilee of 77 and would go back in a flash
what a fookin brilliant time i had !!!!
thats why im grumpy as my kids kids tell me,the little f.......s even bought me a t shirt and book for xmas .

I don’t think that I was too bad between the ages of 40 and 50. However, from my mid 50’s onwards, I have definitely become a Victor Meldrew clone. Sometimes the slightest thing will exasperate me beyond any reason. Things that I would have laughed at in the past, just drive me bananas. Even Mrs.Chips has noticed and regularly tells me that, if I’m not careful, I’ll turn into a miserable bd. Personally, I think it’s too late because I’m already there!
Now f*ck off and stop asking stupid questions.

Apologies for the serious answer (I'm old and grumpy) but it's mostly down to testosterone deficiency i.e. the manopause.

And the less serious answer is because of the rise of the freemen movement. 'Noone tells me what to do' etc...

Why the fk are you asking that? When you get to my age you will be bloody grumpy.

Mostly in my case, at the moment, it's because of Bloody Emma, which is the most uncomfortable mattress known to man. I'm in a hotel tonight and can't wait to sleep on a comfortable mattress. Emma is shortly to be kicked back to her maker...

Of course ask me another day, I have plenty of other reasons to be grumpy...

A while back I read an article - I think in New Scientist but can’t guarantee it (advancing age plays trick with memory!) - that quoted a study that had looked at satisfaction with life by age. This seemed to show that people were least happy / most miserable between 45 and 65 but after 65 they got happier again.

I think middle age problem worst period because you realise that you are no longer young and for many people things start to go backwards, not forwards eg if you play a sport you can’t kid yourself you are going to get better.

There are probably lots of stresses at that time too, kids becoming teenagers/leaving home, problems with relationships, menopausal spouses, realisation that you’ve peaked in your career (or just bored after working in same job/industry/career for so long).

Physical health starts to decline too. Many of my friends have one or more chronic issues. Seeing people your own age die makes you realise you are not immortal.

All very reasonable. I am approaching rapidly my mid 30s and I want to do my best to not become another cliché in only a few years.

Of course there are exceptions and I'm hoping to emulate them.

If I'm not grumpy, does that prove I'm not middle aged, yet?
