whatsapp desktop? doesnt connect

been using whatapp on my laptop but just lately it struggles to connect to the phone , phone is a few feet away and connected to internet

anything i should be doing ?

Is your phone on wifi ? If not then this will prevent it working as the phone runs a background app for your PC connection to work. Can't remember if there is a setting on the phone app to allow it to work on cellular networks.

phone is on the same wifi as the laptop...always has been , just seems to struggle to connect

Not sure if this is correct - I use WhatsApp web or the app on my Mac which isn't on wifi at all and it works seamlessly.

How do you update the WhatsApp app ? Through the app, the MS app store, or downloading from the WhatsApp webpage? Might be worth trying an uninstall and then installing from the web page.

There's also a Beta version that is available in the Microsoft Store, it's a ground-up redesign so it might not have the same issue. Pretty sure mine is working over WiFi or Cellular too.
