Investing in art
Discussion
Don’t know if this is the right place but….
Anyone here investing in art as part of their portfolio? I’m looking into it at present so would appreciate any insight. I’ve been speaking to a couple of advisories but would be great to hear from those who have actually stumped up, realised returns etc. Cheers.

I collect paintings from a fairly well known painter and also sculpture from a known sculptor.
Whether they will appreciate in value is anybody’s guess, I haven’t tried selling anything.
If you’re buying and selling at auction then your item has to have appreciated substantially just to recoup the fees - 30% plus on the hammer price when you buy and the same deducted when you sell, galleries charge similar commissions.
Better to buy directly from the artist although this is difficult if they are represented.
If I were approaching art as an investment I’d spend a while researching collectible artists, track their previous London auction prices and then see if their works come up with cheap guide prices at provincial auctions.
But you have to like what you buy as you may be looking at it for a long time!

I'm an accidental art investor. I bought two banksys at source, both for sub £1k each. Both signed.
I almost bought a nick walker piece for a few thousand which would have tanked in value. Thank God I dodged that.
I like Jose Parla and Adam Neate. I'd invest in the former, not the latter.
