Selling a car for my other half, all is well, bloke offered full asking price and wants to come tomorrow, but...

My other half "just remembered" she wants to keep the personalised plates.

Is there any way I can sell it AND retain the plate? Or do I now need to postpone the sale?

Postpone sale until plates are on retention, and age related plate is back on the car.

Take it off online now. You can sell the car but without the V5. (V5 will arrive in maybe a week)

If I was buyer I'd be nervous, but that's the option.

Other is sell as is & trust the new owner to do the right thing.

Online retention.
You have until 7pm tonight .
Tick tock.
Paperwork wont be right until it comes through but you can get the plates sorted.
Do you still have the cars correct plates? Otherwise get yourself to halfords first thing tomorrow.

You can still agree sale and passover and tax when the new v5 comes through. It may take an extra week or so but at least the OP wont bdctotally wasting the buyrrs time tomorrow.

Nope, I bought a car which had the plate changed at sale and was an absolute ball ache as couldn’t tax it for 4 weeks

When I bought my car, it had the previous owners plate on it. The dealer asked if I'd return it which was no skin off my nose. Not his fault and the plate wasn't 'really' mine (even though it could be argued it was). It was the right thing to do and I got a new plate for it instead.

Maybe I was naïve but screwing someone over for a plate just didn't sit right with me.

Make sure you let the buyer know you're taking the plate off, they could well have agreed that price based on the plate being included.

Absolutely, this was my first action. I hate selling cars, even more so when it's for someone else.

Does anyone remember the thread where the guy was trying to get back/buy back a private plate that was on a crashed finance car that the finance company was then trying to sell-on or something? Did it get resolved and the thread removed as part of an NDA or is it still here?

I don't understand this. If I wanted to keep the plate from my car I'd remove it before I put it up for sale. It's not that difficult.

It's more likely that the OP or his wife have suddenly noticed the plate may be valuable so want to keep it. Who doesn't remember they have a personalised number plate when they sell a car?

I did that with the guy who bought my Monaro VXR.

Never heard back from him.

It's even more likely that the reason for the situation is clearly stated in the OP, but I guess it wouldn't be PH without a couple of random guesswork internet heroes dropping into the thread to waste bandwidth. thumbup

Drama over now, car sold.
