Leftfield suggestion and it’ll be bloody hard work but depending where you are in the country, £150k will buy you a freehold pub. You’ll have somewhere to live and a new career with some seed money and no debts (plus no time to do anything else) so you probably don’t need it to do much more than wash its face…

Why not buy a vehicle that you can then drive with your license and create your own job/business?

Ready mix concrete truck / hgv recovery vehicle / tanker etc? Just some ideas.

Not a bad shout, we recently had a concrete truck and pump truck. The pump guy only started out on his own last January and is now looking to take on another truck/driver. Young lad doing really well for himself, was great to see.

If you've got no kids or particular ties to the area, Just move.

Look around for somewhere you would want to live and where you could afford by a nice house. Then look for a job that will support it all.

Try to look around prolems and not let them block your view. Yes you would like a garage but if you found a nice house and it didn't have one ,could you rent one? That sort of thing.

Prioritise how important EVERYTHING is.

House
Garage
Location
Size
Job
Income reqd

The job could be anything. Make a list of ANY jobs you COULD do and then go through the list again and sort out the ones you WANT to do.
I think you will find quite long list and by the end of it two lists that are quite interesting.

Good luck with whatever you do.

If you are expecting to work days only and around 40hours a week you won't get half of that.

If you are prepared to spend nights out, travel abroad for potentially weeks, train to carry unusual loads or hazardous materials then 50k+ is out there.

Class 1 pay isn't often as good as people make it out to be, when people say what they earn they forget to tell you about the long unsociable hours that they do to get it.

What salary are you expecting to earn on class 1?

You should be doing well at the moment…..what hours are you doing?

Consider moving into planning/transport management if you want to get off the road.

Not sure if this helps or indeed applicable but a friends brother drove lorries as part of being in the army - when he came out that isn’t what he wanted to do as a career and instead used the qualifications he did have to train to be a crane person (technician?). Seems to be well paid and he loves it.

That's what I did in my late 30's.

Lots of people dismiss it because of the numbers applying but if you don't apply you don't get. I got the second job I applied for.

Before I got my job I considered a few different things.

Buying one of those 7.5t enclosed vehicle lorries for discreet covered transportation of expensive cars.

Mobile heater and generator hire for outdoor events. Used to work for a Tipi wedding company and was always jealous of the heating and power guys that would tip up for a maximum of 30 mins on site while we were there all day.

I know someone on the rate mentioned. Not sure of the hours, but i don’t think he spends nights away and certainly no foreign travel. I thought we was on about 25k and was very suprised when he told me how much he pulls (full paye with a good company)

On the rail theme, signalmen jobs are being advertised 25k for a small junction and 50k for a big junction. Not sure how you progress from one to the other.

Exactly. I employ 70 HGV1 drivers and not one earns less than £50k. They are all trampers though.

In your experience, maybe. I'd like to think that we provide the very best terms and environment that we can for the team.
