Driving in to work this morning, I came off the motorway and onto a B-road that was covered in spilled diesel the whole way along its 3 miles (came from a broken down bus). It was raining slightly too, and I skidded slightly on the roundabout at the start of the road, no big deal as I kept it under control. I kept my speed down to 40 - 45mph, as it really is treacherous all the way along this road. I noticed a 5 series BMW behind me who seemed in a bit of a hurry, and he passed me on a straight, no problems whatsoever, he obviously felt safe at the speed he was travelling at in those conditions.
At the set of lights on the outskirts of town, there was a queue of traffic that we both were at the back of. The lights turned green, and we set off. As we both approach the junction (20 - 25mph), the lights began to change back to red. The lights were on red, and the BMW in front of me drove through them. There was a yellow sign in the back window of the BMW stating that it is a police driver training vehicle. I know they do high speed driving supposedly within the law, but are they allowed to drive thru red lights too whilst training?

Anyone care to comment?

If a vehicle is being used for police purposes (and that includes driver training) then there are certain exemptions. One is treating a red light as a give way sign.

Did any other driver have to alter speed or direction, to avoid the BMW?

no one had to alter speed or direction, the lights had just changed to red as we approached, and it looked like he thought about stopping, changed his mind and proceeded thru the light on red. The next traffic phase had yet to change. It was a technical infringement, that caused no problems to any other road users.
